The tricky part with parental lock software is that you have to install it on every device in the home. If you have multiple tablets, smartphones, laptops etc. it gets a bit unwieldy. There are a couple of options that protect all devices in one go, such as OpenDNS (it's free, but is pretty techy to setup and easy for kids to circumvent) and KoalaSafe, an Aussie company (disclosure: I work for them) that offers a box with an easy iphone interface to setup time limits, controls etc.
I love that Angela talked to her kids about the parental lock system for their computers and how it works and why they have it! I think that going about it this way means that you're helping to keep them safe, yet they can still learn freely and feel as though they're doing it independently.
