Karl Stefanovic says "breakups are no-one’s business".

Karl Stefanovic is no stranger to having his relationship scrutinised by the public.

Over the weekend, it was reported that the Today Show co-host had split with his wife of 21 years, Cassandra Thorburn, and was staying at business mogul James Packer’s Bondi apartment.

After his noticeable absence from the show yesterday, Karl returned to our screens this morning and wasted no time sharing his thoughts on the gossip surrounding celebrity couples.

While discussing news that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were headed for divorce, Stefanovic said, "you can obviously argue it is no one’s business what is going on inside there".

He did agree that because the relationship is so high profile, it's a "tough situation" to talk about.

"That fishbowl, I would imagine, would be very difficult if you are living inside of it. Trying to repair or trying to look after your kids as well," he said.

The TV star and his wife have yet to publicly comment on the reports their marriage is over, but just a year ago, Karl praised his wife for dedicating her life to caring for their three children.

“She gave up a promising career at the ABC and I’m forever thankful and tremendously appreciative of that,” he says.

“Cass wanted to be at home, and wants to be there now, and we’re very lucky to be in a financial position where we can do that."

“But should she ever want to go back to work, then of course she can."

break ups are hard enough when it's just you and your ex dealing with the fall out (although with family/friends/colleagues weighing in) but to do it in the media spotlight where sensationalism overtakes sensitivity and respect for others' privacy must be unbelievably hard. although they are a celebrity couple and many would argue that they have cultivated this attention, it's still two people coming to terms with the demise of their relationship and their family unit as they knew it, and that's the sad part.
