Jared Leto just cut off his luscious merman hair. This is not a drill.

There’s one Hollywood star whose hair fills women the world over with joy, inspiration and envy unrivalled by any other A-list ‘do. Long, beachy, slightly wavy, with immaculately ombre ends — it is such stuff as hair dreams are made on, to paraphrase Shakespeare.

It’s not Blake Lively, sorry. Margot Robbie? Psssht, please.

I am speaking, of course, about singer, actor, possible merman and Jesus doppelganger, Jared Leto.

Jared’s career has had a huge renaissance in recent years, culminating in his Oscar win in 2014, but it’s the 43-year-old’s hair that’s truly captivated the masses. Whether it’s down and shaggy, or scooped back into a red carpet-ready man bun or braid (no, seriously), Jared’s hair has been terminally on point.

So you can understand the shock this morning when the Dallas Buyers Club star nonchalantly posted THIS on Instagram, with the caption, “I miss my beard already”:

Oh, it's nothing, Jared. Just shatter a million hearts and dreams with one fell snip, why don't you?

However, hurt feelings aside, it seems Jared's dramatic chop and beard shave happened for a good reason and not just to mess with the universe.

David Ayers, director of Suicide Squad — an upcoming film based on a DC comic, in which Jared will play The Joker — shared the before and after shots on Twitter, adding the film's hashtags. He also posted an ominous warning yesterday, tweeting, "Something will happen. Tomorrow."

Well, it certainly was something. Here's the after shot:

Yep, Jared's back to the short, dark hair of his Requiem for a Dream days. Admittedly, it looks excellent. The man bun will be missed, however.
