US first daughter Ivanka Trump has been accused of posting a “wildly offensive” photo of herself and husband Jared Kushner dressed up ahead of a function.
The poorly-timed Twitter and Instagram post has been criticised as insensitive to the plight of those refugees and immigrants from countries including Syria and Yemen who are temporarily banned from entering the US thanks to an order by her father, President Donald Trump, on Friday.
Critics have labelled Ivanka, pictured in a silver gown with her husband, and her post as “clueless”, “inappropriate” and “tone deaf”.
As the couple attended the Alfalfa Club dinner on Saturday night, dozens of visa holders were detained at airports across the country as authorities grappled to impose the president’s 90-day ban of citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries.
Some social media users compared Ivanka’s dress to survival blankets given to refugees.
Others compared the post to a statement famously attributed to Marie Antoinette, who was reportedly said to have uttered ‘Let them eat cake’ around 1789 when told the French public had no bread.
One Instagram user repeated the story of a five-year-old boy detained at an airport for hours before he could rejoin his family.
“And all you care about is being glam and all set for a dinner?? SHAME ON YOU!!! This is disgusting and outrageous!,” they wrote.
“Get out of you million pounds mansion, drive to the airport and ask yourself if you would like to see your glamours kids live what the common population is living right now! #lethemeatcake.”
Ivanka has not responded to the criticism.

Sorry, but the woman is allowed to go out and use her instagram account. I wonder how many of those criticising have also updated their social media accounts with fun stuff they are doing while refugees suffer?
I hate Trump and all he stands for, but attacking his daughter for living her life is low and helps nothing. She is not the President and has no power.
Yes it is Ivankas Dad that is President (God help us!) and not her BUT her husband is one of the Presidents Senior Advisors. As such, her picture, I believe, is in poor taste and so badly timed. It has been reported that Ivanka told her Dad to act more Presidential during the campaign, she, along with her husband may want to take heed themselves.
