An Italian teenager has died after her long hair became caught in her car’s steering wheel.

19-year-old Caterina Alzetta died as her car careered across the road into oncoming traffic on Friday, the Daily Mail reports.

The accident reportedly occured in the northern Italian town of Montereale Valcellina, when the young woman rolled down a window and the wind caused her hair to stick in the wheel, the Huffington Post reports.

The Daily Mail reports that Alzetta and her 21-year-old brother had to be cut free from the wreckage.

Alzetta, whom the Huffington Post reports was a physical therapy student, died in hospital from her injuries later that day.

Alzettas’ father, the head of the emergency rescue service in the town, confirmed the tragic incident, according to UK newspaper The Mirror.

“My daughter’s hair was thick and long, but tragically her hair got caught in the steering wheel,” Michele Alzetta said.

As we understand it when she made a sudden movement of the head it pulled on the steering wheel,” he said.

Two brothers aged 42 and 47 were in the other car. They were hospitalised after the crash, New York Daily News reports.
