How to save your phone after dropping it in water.

So on Saturday morning I’m in bed reading the paper on my ipad (brag brag). And my toddler wanders in to rustle around my bedside table and I’m distracted and then he says “Mama! Dat!” (this means ‘that’) and points to a glass of water IN WHICH HE’S PUT MY IPHONE.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I said.

He was rather proud of himself. So I try to dry it and I switch it off and then it starts vibrating. Terrific. It no longer works as a phone but the good news is I am the proud owner of Apple’s first sex toy. The ivibrator.

So I take out the SIM and find an old Nokia which I no longer remember how to use and I put my soggy little iphone in the sun. Every so often it vibrates for 10 minutes and then stops.

At the suggestion of my husband, I take to Twitter for advice. I do bloody love that about Twitter. There are so many people there willing and able to give you advice about anything from baking to technology, the weather, trivia….there’s nothing you can’t find out on Twitter. Suck on that Google and Wiki.

Anyway.

So Twitter told me to put my iphone in a sealed bag with uncooked rice to draw out the moisture. It also suggested those little silicon packs you get in vitamin bottles and shoe boxes. So naturally, I did both. The end result was something I like to call iphone risotto with silicone foam. Suck on that Matt Preston.

One problem. Before I did this, I took out the SIM card and forgot to put in the little case-thing that seals up where the SIM goes. SO NOW I HAVE RICE STUCK IN MY PHONE.

Sigh.

And I’m too scared to turn it on. The good news is that it’s stopped vibrating. Oh wait, maybe that’s the bad news. Now I don’t even have an ivibrator….

Got a good phone injury story? Any words of wisdom for me?

My previous phone died three times due to water damage, and at one point even had so much water in it that when you held it up you could see the water level... like a fish tank...

Each of these times I put it in a contained or rice for a day, turned it on and ... voila! ... it was alive again.

Then, one day it got ONE DROP of water on the keypad. Bam. Dead. No amount of rice would make it turn back on again.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, for any disbelievers... rice works. It saves phones. :)

When you drop a phone, mobile or cordless, in the water the worst thing to do is turn it on straight away and see if it still works. If you can dry it out first, then turn it on, you won't fry the insides. Most phones stop working after they've been swimming because our first instinct is to turn it on and see if it still works.
