Obligatory Facebook status update: It's really, really, really hot right now.

I have to say, as far as waves go, heat waves are probably one of my least favourite.

Obviously less favourable than the mexican variety, no-where near as enjoyable as those at the beach and not nearly as polite as those offered up by courteous passing drivers. In fact, the only ‘wave’ that I actually enjoy less is Sound Wave – because surely no-one really likes heavy metal music..

However, the unfortunate reality for us Australians (particularly in Victoria/ Queensland and South Australia) we must suffer through it at least once a year. But thankfully for us they usually only fall on weekdays. Because who wants those pesky hot days getting in the way of your weekends when you have all the time in the world to be galavanting at the beach or lapping it up poolside. Certainly not me, thats for sure.

Anyway, as we are right in the Robin Thicke of it, I thought I would offer up some tips on getting through this difficult time:

1. Restless nights often mean grumpy you. This can be trying for workplace relations. Therefore it is important to think before you act (or snap). This is not the time to tell people how you really feel about their Excel formatting or the fades they use in their Powerpoint presentations.

2. Water is an essential part of staying cool. However, it is advisable to drink it rather than pouring directly over your head.

3. Air conditioning can be the difference between you staying cool and being hot. Therefore given most of Australia’s tendency for hot days, it is a good idea to invest in it. If you can’t afford it then a towel and fan can be quite a handy tool. Otherwise shack up with Tubby Taylor. From what i’ve seen in the Fujitsu ads, he’s got like eight in his house.

4. No matter how hot it is, it’s never appropriate to wear thongs to work. Same goes with Ugg boots and cowboy hats.

5. Like any difficult time, friends are important in heat waves. Therefore it is a good idea to keep them onside. One way to ensure you make it through, friendships unscathed, is to avoid posting any updates about how hot you are or images of car temperature gauges. If you’re friends are as clever as you are, they will have also realised it is hot.

6. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Like flies. Better to focus your attention on the bigger issues.. like the fact it’s 45 FREAKING DEGREES.

7. And finally this is a weather girl’s rock-star moment. It is the one time of the year when people tune into the news just for them. So do the right thing by your fellow lady and give them your full attention. You never know, it might one day be YOU standing up there. (probably not).

How do you plan to beat the heat this summer?
