I have a confession to make: I haven’t painted my toenails in, like, three months.

Wait, shit, that’s the wrong confession.

My other confession is that I am bad — nay, AWFUL — at all the things you need to reach career success. You know, like “networking” and “negotiating” and “bargaining” and other buzzwords you learn at online business school.

Lucky me, there’s a new Reddit thread where people who are super fabbo at all that stuff share their wisdom. And get this: they each earn of 100,000 clams every friggin’ year.

Here are their top tips for a job dunce like myself.

Prioritise your bed over your car.

Yep, according to TossMe68, choosing the best bed over the best car will pay dividends (who knew?). Also, cutting down your daily commute will improve your attitude and outlook on life, which means better performance and — HEY — more career progression!

"Go with the better bed, forget the car. Live close to work/cut down your commute as much as possible and then buy something you like to drive on weekends."

How refreshingly simple.

Take these six steps.

For Sully1102, career success really can be reached by following these six steps.

1. Get the first job.
2. Be great at that job.
3. Get a raise/promotion.
4. Be great at that job.
5. Move to new company/job, demand more money.
6. Repeat steps 2-5.

Yep, according to this bizzo whiz, you need to be changing your workplace after you get a raise or promotion. Jumping around a lil' bit can lead to greater career progression.

This advice was echoed by DinoHammer:

"Just keep looking for better jobs and don't be afraid to change jobs for more money. You have nothing to lose and it is easier to negotiate when you have a job already."

Create opportunities, and take them.

Take PimpSlipper (great name), for example:

"I'm currently exceeding 100k by a good margin.

"Worked my ass off for years, trying to get better and better at what I do, made lots of friends and contacts who trust me, looked for opportunities, made a couple silly choices, then seized my latest opportunity by the balls. I'm currently working 50-60 hours a week, but trying very hard to get that down."

While 60 hours of work each week isn't exactly desirable, PimpSlipper capped off his advice with what is now my favourite saying: "Just keep cranking man."

Brilliant.

Become the kind of employee who can answer these questions.

"What have you learned? Why are you a valuable employee? Where do you add value to the company?"

If you can go to your boss with all these questions neatly answered, you deserve a raise. Keep being able to answer these questions and you'll see your career skyrocket in the coming years.

When you're negotiating salary, aim high.

Discussing how much you're worth can be awkward and cringeworthy, but Rushaz says it's incredibly important. So AIM FOR THE STARS, people, and you might fall upon a cushier salary than you thought possible.

"Don't be afraid to ask what you think is fair for pay. Don't go nuts, but if you toss a number that's high, sometimes some will offer that pay. If not, they may haggle on it and you may get more than what was posted or initially offered."
