Green eyeliner: the trend you never knew you needed to try.

Eye makeup this season is all about bright jewel tones: think amethyst, sapphire and turquoise. But, at the moment, we have eyes for only one colour: green.

The colour of emeralds and jade is having a huge eyeliner moment, and, while green is known for making brown eyes pop (yay, me!) you’ll be surprised to learn that green eyeliner can work beautifully with other eye colours, too.

The trick to wearing green eyeliner without going the “full Shrek” is to restrict the placement of the colour. Use green eyeliner on either your upper or lower eyelid, and not both. Or, apply it in a V shape, like Karlie Kloss in the photo below, so that the green extends from the inner corners of your eyelids to just above and below the pupil.

Make sure you’re using a green eyeliner, and not a shadow. An eyeliner will give a clean, precise and dramatic hit of green, which looks very modern and not at all like one of those girls from that noughties music video, Butterfly, by Crazy Town.

It also really helps to use a black eyeliner to waterline your eyes. This is because the green eyeliner can make the rims of your eyes look a bit red. I don't usually do this, but for this look, I used black mascara on my lower eyelashes, just to get some definition against all that green.

Beyonce has gone for a more subtle approach by using green eyeliner to highlight her hazel eyes. I mean, when everyone can see your entire butt through your Met Gala Ball dress, you’d want your makeup to be a bit simpler, right?

My favourite way to wear coloured eyeliner right now is to line the bottom lid only, and to have the top lid swathed in a darker, neutral shade, like taupe, brown or black.

Bollywood actress, Aishwarya Rai wore this look on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. Even though Aish is famously green-eyed, and her dress was also green, the green eyeliner looks both smouldering and fun, rather than theatrical.

But, I must admit that my main inspiration on becoming a green-eyed monster (jealousy is hot…right?!) is everyone’s favourite Real Housewife of Melbourne, Gina Liano.

Her gaze has been described as “Nefertiti eyes” by Sydney gossip columnist, Andrew Hornery. And if you get caught in it…look out. In the opening credits of RHOM, Gina says, “I deal in fact, not friction,” but what she should really say is, “I deal in green eyeliner, and green eyeliner, and also all the makeup.” I love you, Gina!
