This little girl was born without a vagina but doctors say she could still have children one day.

Incredibly doctors say that one day Poppy might be able to have children.

Eight-year old Poppy Wadsworth loves singing and dancing, Disney Princess and painting her nails.

Just like every eight-year girl I know.

With her sandy hair, wide smile and lightly freckled face she looks just like most eight-year old girls I know.

But eight-year old Poppy, from York in the UK,  isn’t just like other little girls, though she so desperately wants to be.

Eight-year old Poppy suffers a rare condition called cloaca meaning that this little girl was born with two wombs and no vagina, rectum or anus.

“Basically speaking, Poppy was born without an anal opening, her waste is taken from her body by a bag. Her one functioning kidney doesn’t work properly and she is permanently changing antibiotics to try to fight infections in her kidneys and urethra. She has some sort of womb, but no vagina,” her mum told The Yorkshire Post.

Cloaca anomalies occur in just 1 per 50,000 live births.

When she was pregnant Poppy’s mother, Alison, never knew her unborn daughter suffered the birth defect.

“It was a seven-minute birth, then they whisked her off for a bath and delivered her back to me wrapped in a pink blanket. I didn’t notice anything.

“It was only 24 hours after Poppy was born they realized there was a problem. She was like a doll. She had the little line of a girl and then nothing. Just pure, smooth skin.

“They had to do blood tests to determine if she was male or female. The doctors said, ‘don’t worry, she will still be your little girl'” Alison told The Express.

Poppy faces teasing at school.

Doctors put a stoma in – saving Poppy’s life but despite repeated procedures but they have come to the end of the road and can do no more. In order to live a more normal life Poppy needs groundbreaking surgery and the only place she can get that is in the US.

Her mum, Alison, is now desperately trying to raise money to get Poppy that surgery.

The hospital in the US have agreed to cover half the cost of the operation which will allow her to allow her to use the toilet normally, and, possibly, give her the chance to one day have children.

Her mum is trying to raise the rest – more than A$100,000 herself.

For Poppy life has challenges most of us could not imagine, not helped by the teasing she often experiences at school.

“She sometimes gets a hard time at school because she smells if the stoma bag gets knocked and a smell escapes, but she can’t help it and kids can’t help being kids “her mum told The Yorkshire Post.

“When she started school she did come home in tears as some of the boys had teased her about wearing a nappy. But overall they have been really good. I have made sure since she started nursery and reception that everyone in the class knew.

“She just tells the other children that she has to poo into a bag because she can’t poo normally.”

What her mother, Alison, hopes for is to take Poppy to the US in the next few months for the surgery.

What Alison dreams of is that one day Poppy will be able to have children of her own.

“If she has kids she wouldn’t be able to give birth naturally. She would need to be induced and have a Caesarean,’ she told The Daily Mail.

“We will cross that bridge when we get there.

“She never gets upset. It’s almost like she already knows what her future will be.”

For this tenacious eight-year old we certainly hope the future holds everything she dreams of.
