Suffer from hay fever? Here are 6 foods that can help relieve symptoms.

One in five Australians very likely hate going to the florist. Their worst nightmare probably involves going to your house for dinner and playing with your cat.

But don’t despair, there’s hope! A new study conducted by Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Tennessee found that eating a pot of yogurt a day is enough to keep hay fever symptoms at bay.

The researcher found that the probiotics in yogurt can ease hay fever symptoms and can also influence the behaviour of white blood cells, giving the immune system a boost. *Runs to supermarket cold section.* These are the other foods that might help…

1. Kiwi Fruit

Packing a punch of vitamin C (more than oranges), kiwi fruit is a natural anti-histamine and anti inflammatory, and also supports your immune system.

2. Honey

This liquid gold contains the pollens that cause your hay fever to flare up. So by eating locally-sourced honey you are building up your immune system to protect itself against these allergens. It is just like wrapping your body in a blanket, or wearing armour.

3. Garlic

Know for its smelly breath-inducing properties, and (thankfully), garlic helps with nasal congestion and has many antibiotic properties. It is also a wonderful source of quercetine, another natural anti-histamine.

4. Ginger

Another root vegetable you should be getting amongst if you have hay fever is ginger. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory and can assist in reducing nasal swelling.

5. Pineapple

Often you will find that suffers of hay fever lack bioflavonoids, an antioxidant that helps to keep your eyes healthy. Not only do pineapples contain bioflavonoids (as do lemons), they are also rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps to clear out your nose and break down mucus.
