Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt a little self-conscious about the colour of your teeth. Us too.

Whether it was that second coffee this morning or a cheeky glass of red wine last night, small things in our day-to-day lives can leave our teeth looking dull and our confidence shaken.

Because not everyone has the time or funds for professional whitening treatments, we asked Mamamia’s resident makeup artist and beauty guru Natalie Wright for the lowdown on a smile that pops.

Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on teeth whitening, she assures us we can achieve similar results at home for a fraction of the cost.

Without further ado, here are Nat’s top five hacks for a smile that’ll shine bright like a diamond.

1. Try some highlighter.

If you're not familiar with highlighter, this magical makeup product is the perfect way to, you guessed it, highlight your lovely features.

Nat recommends placing some of your favourite highlighter on your cupid's bow to create the illusion of a fuller pout.

2. Whiten on-the-go.

Want a smile that pops but short on time? A whitening pen is one of the easiest ways to lighten up on-the-go.

The Colgate Optic White® toothbrush with built-in whitening pen is Nat's go-to. Simply paint the product on your teeth as directed as part of your daily routine, and it'll work its magic.

3. Choose your colour wisely.

When it comes to lipstick, some shades can flatter your chompers more than others.

To fake a brighter smile, opt for a blue-based red lipstick. The cooler blue undertones will contrast with the yellow in your teeth and bring out the white, making your teeth appear whiter.

4. Line and define.

Once you've applied your blue-based red, Nat's top tip is to go back in with lip liner.

With a lip liner at least two shades darker than your lip colour, she suggests lining the edges of your lips to add extra definition to your smile.

But don't forget to blend with your lipstick brush for a seamless finish.

5. Add the finishing touch.

After all your hard work, the last thing you'd want is for your perfectly placed lipstick to end up all over your beautiful white teeth.

To remove excess lipstick from the insides of your lips quickly, Nat says simply place your finger in your mouth... and pull it out.

Yes, it feels kind of weird, but it's the easiest way to make sure your smile stays where you want it to.
