I fully support the co-payment for a bulk billed GP visit. Will this also apply to an Emergency hospital visit? I recently had my first experience in the emergency unit at our local hospital. It was a real eye opener! To me it appeared that the majority of people sitting in the (packed) waiting area were there for minor ailments and could not be considered emergency by any stretch of imagination.
8> What a beat up. Good luck finding a GP in Tassie that bulk bills anyway. We have to find $70+ before we can see a doctor. Sure we get ~$35 back but still need the rest up front. Can't remember anyone dying from not being able to afford a GP visit and those on low income with a health care card are exempt anyway.
I'm sure there are many people who didn't bother going to the GP for things like shortness of breath, chest pains, headaches, stomach aches, moles, etc that turned out of the heart attacks, strokes, ectoptic pregnancies, melanomas etc.
Some people are laisse faire about their health at the best of time - having to pay for a GP visit for something that is "probably nothing" is just another excuse, that could lead to an avoidable death.
Fair call, then let's up the Medicare levy and pay that way. There is not enough money for the government to pay all our medical fees so that money has to come from somewhere.
There is a doctors surgery in Gladstone St, Salamanca that bulk bills. Only one I know of though. My doctor bulk bills for children...
Reading this comment made me feel shortness of breath, chest pains, headaches and stomach aches. I need get a free check-up just to be sure though.
The thing is, there are also many people who abuse the system as well, going along the lines of "it's probably something".
We can both approach this from our own angle, surely though you must agree there needs to be a balance between the extremes of what you and I have said.
