8 of the best hidden gems in Queensland to take your kids.

Thanks to our brand partner, Accor

It’s winter in the southern states, which can only mean two things: my kids are spending more time than I’d like to admit cuddled up inside watching cartoons, and I’m absolutely desperate for a family holiday somewhere warm.

Although Australia is chock-full of incredible, sunny destinations which are great for families with young kids, Queensland will always have a special place in my heart. They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing — I don’t think I’ve ever run into bad weather on my many trips there over the years.

If you’re sold on the Queensland dream and just need inspiration on where to try next, here’s a list of all my favourite spots and hidden gems your kids (read: you) will be obsessed with.

1. Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast

Coolum Beach is a classic family beachside destination just waiting to be discovered. If you’re imagining expansive sand, paddling in crystal-clear shallows and making sandcastles until the sun sets, you’ve got the right idea.

Where to stay: The Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort is an amazing base to explore Coolum and its beautiful surrounds.

2. Surfer’s Paradise, Gold Coast

The glistening metropolis of the Gold Coast is paradise for kids and parents alike. Queensland is full of incredible family friendly hotels, with Accor offering a huge range of family-friendly and convenient spots to stay, and the Gold Coast is no exception. With prices starting at $151 a night, staying in Queensland’s equivalent of "the big smoke" doesn’t have to cost your whole holiday budget. And by the way, did someone mention Dreamworld just down the road?

Where to stay: Mantra Crown Towers Surfers Paradise is right in the thick of the action, so you and the kids won’t miss a thing.

3. The Great Barrier Reef, Tropical North Queensland

"Hidden gem" might be a bit of a stretch for one of the most famous destinations in the world, but what parents might not realise is just how much value your kids can get out of the reef too, even if they aren’t old enough to snorkel. Take a glass-bottomed boat ride and experience one of the wonders of the world up close and personal — it’s an experience your kids won’t easily forget.

Where to stay: The Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort and Spa is the ultimate family resort spot with access to the reef.

4. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Gold Coast

From crocodiles to koalas, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places in this country to meet and greet native Australian wildlife. If your kids are animal-lovers like mine, then the opportunity to explore the sprawling Sanctuary shouldn’t be missed.

Where to stay: Treat yourself with a stay at Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach, just a short drive down the road.

5. The Daintree Rainforest, Tropical North Queensland

The Daintree is one of the oldest and most complex ecosystems in the world. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, the best way to describe a visit is "awe-inspiring" — a day trip to the Daintree is a magical way to connect with nature and truly leave the world behind.

Where to stay: Use Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort as a jumping-off point into all things Daintree.

6. Currimundi Lake and Beach, Sunshine Coast

If you’re not familiar with Currimundi Lake, it’s your lucky day, because it’s a fantastic spot for families. A previous winner of Queensland’s cleanest beach award, expect your toughest decision to be a choice between a swim on the beach or in the lake.

Where to stay: Mantra Mooloolaba Beach will give you access to Currimundi plus all its glorious neighbours.

7. South Bank, Brisbane

You’ll probably recognise the beautiful South Bank and love wandering underneath the famous flower archway, but that’s not all South Bank has to offer. Take a spin on the Wheel of Brisbane and splash in the man-made Streets Beach in the middle of the city.

Where to stay: The Mantra South Bank Brisbane is close to everything to love about South Bank with a fun, contemporary vibe.

8. Noosa, Sunshine Coast

Bringing together unspoilt natural beauty and a charming coastal town, Noosa is famous with families for a reason. Take a stroll along the beachfront with an ice-cream in hand, visit any of the kid-friendly cafes and restaurants along the main street or head out onto the Coastal Walk to take in some scenery: there’s really nothing that Noosa can’t offer a family holiday.

Where to stay: Enjoy the villa-style accommodation perfect for families at Peppers Noosa.
