8 of the best hidden gems in Queensland to take your kids.

It’s winter in the southern states, which can only mean two things: my kids are spending more time than I’d like to admit cuddled up inside watching cartoons, and I’m absolutely desperate for a family holiday somewhere warm. 

Although Australia is chock-full of incredible, sunny destinations which are great for families with young kids, Queensland will always have a special place in my heart. They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing — I don’t think I’ve ever run into bad weather on my many trips there over the years. 

If you’re sold on the Queensland dream and just need inspiration on where to try next, here’s a list of all my favourite spots and hidden gems your kids (read: you) will be obsessed with. 

1. Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast

Coolum Beach is a classic family beachside destination just waiting to be discovered. If you’re imagining expansive sand, paddling in crystal-clear shallows and making sandcastles until the sun sets, you’ve got the right idea.

Where to stay: The Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort is an amazing base to explore Coolum and its beautiful surrounds. 

2. Surfer’s Paradise, Gold Coast 

The glistening metropolis of the Gold Coast is paradise for kids and parents alike. 3. The Great Barrier Reef, Tropical North Queensland

"Hidden gem" might be a bit of a stretch for one of the most famous destinations in the world, but what parents might not realise is just how much value your kids can get out of the reef too, even if they aren’t old enough to snorkel. Take a glass-bottomed boat ride and experience one of the wonders of the world up close and personal — it’s an experience your kids won’t easily forget.

4. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Gold Coast

From crocodiles to koalas, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places in this country to meet and greet native Australian wildlife. If your kids are animal-lovers like mine, then the opportunity to explore the sprawling Sanctuary shouldn’t be missed.

5. The Daintree Rainforest, Tropical North Queensland

The Daintree is one of the oldest and most complex ecosystems in the world. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, the best way to describe a visit is "awe-inspiring" — a day trip to the Daintree is a magical way to connect with nature and truly leave the world behind.

6. Currimundi Lake and Beach, Sunshine Coast

If you’re not familiar with Currimundi Lake, it’s your lucky day, because it’s a fantastic spot for families. A previous winner of Queensland’s cleanest beach award, expect your toughest decision to be a choice between a swim on the beach or in the lake.

7. South Bank, Brisbane

You’ll probably recognise the beautiful South Bank and love wandering underneath the famous flower archway, but that’s not all South Bank has to offer. Take a spin on the Wheel of Brisbane and splash in the man-made Streets Beach in the middle of the city.

8. Noosa, Sunshine Coast
