“Social media, especially how I used it, isn’t real.”
One week ago, you’d be forgiven for assuming social media star Essena O’Neill had the perfect life.
The 19-year-old’s glamorous bikini photos, pensive beach shots and pouty, immaculately made-up selfies won her half a million followers on Instagram, as well as 200,000 subscribers on YouTube and Tumblr.
But the Queensland teenager has recently had a change of heart — and now she’s quit social media amid a public campaign to highlight the superficial, manufactured nature of social media.
You can watch a clip of Essena’s announcement here (the whole video is available on YouTube, post continues after clip):
Since Tuesday, Essena has deleted 2000 photos from her Instagram account and changed her account name to “Social Media Is Not Real Life”.
She has also edited the captions on her remaining Instagram photos to detail how they were manufactured, and her honest commentary makes for fascinating and reassuring reading.

You've all fallen for it. Chicks are so credulous.
Yeah, and no guy in the history of the world has ever fallen for something on social media.
I Haven't fallen for it and I am quite insulted by the fawning women and girls who are proclaiming that every woman feels this way when they look at social media pictures of people like this and other celebrities. I am not a sycophant has a desire to be liked of the rich and good-looking people of the world. Yawn...I think she can now replace Kylie Jenner in the comparisons to Malala that were made when they turned 18.
Essena is a brave young woman demonstrating how confident it is for her to embark on the journey of finding who she truly is. The company she keeps, the causes she supports, the social media she does reveal are her form of artistry. I believe this woman is capable of great things, and I truly hope she has the courage and confidence to forge her path. To the ones dismissively commenting on her motive, just as I am unable to speak for her, you aren't able to either. Her words however are loud and clear, her actions, and we can see them demonstrated, are even louder. People, just be nice. That's truly all we need to be.
