Two of Hollywood's biggest actresses were snubbed at the Emmys. Don't let this overshadow the real story.

Another year, another round of outrage over supposed 'snubs' at an awards show.

The 2024 Emmy nominations are here and two of Hollywood's biggest actresses did not make the cut. Cue countless think pieces. Firstly, there was Emma Stone, whose mind-bending turn in The Curse received universal praise.

However, Stone and the Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie series didn't get any noms.

Then there's Nicole Kidman's Expats, with both the actress and the Prime Video series left out of this year’s nominations.

Along with these two snubs that everyone's talking about, Kate Winslet was also expected to get a nomination for her performance in The Regime. The political satire failed to receive a single nomination.

TV criticism is a subjective art and people are within their rights to feel slighted by these women missing out on nominations, despite the fact that Kidman and Winslet already have four Emmys between them. But it's worth noting how outrage over these snubs is overshadowing what we should be celebrating: it's actually been a phenomenal year of television and so many deserving people have been honoured — especially women from minority groups

Starting with Lily Gladstone, a Native American actress who controversially lost out to Stone at the Academy Awards. She was nominated in the supporting actress category for a limited series for Under The Bridge, alongside another Afro-Indigenous star, Kali Reis from True Detective: Night Country, which is the first time any Indigenous woman was nominated for an acting category at the Emmys.

The final season of Reservation Dogs finally scored nomination for outstanding comedy series, and its star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai was nominated for lead actor, a first for any Indigenous actor in the award's history.

I mean, it's embarrassing it's taken this long but this is the progress we should be talking about.

Latino talent scored the acknowledgment they deserve with the likes of Only Murders in the Building's Selena Gomez, Griselda's Sofia Vergara, The Bear's Liza Colón-Zayas, Shōgun's Néstor Carbonell and Baby Reindeer's Nava Mau getting nominations.

Mau is also the second transgender actress recognised in the main acting categories.

True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López nabbed a triple nomination for directing, writing and producing the fourth season of the anthology series, becoming the first Latino to be nominated in the directing category.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith star Maya Erskine and Anna Sawai actress in Shōgun both became only the second and third Asian women nominated in the lead actress category in a drama series.

For the lead actress in a comedy category, this year will mark the first time women of colour have made up the majority of the category with Gomez, Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson, Loot's Maya Rudolph and The Bear's breakout star Ayo Edebiri all nominated, with Edebiri becoming the youngest Black woman nominated for lead comedy actress. She was previously nominated and won the award for best supporting actress.

And finally, at the age of 91, Carol Burnett is the oldest female to nab a comedy acting Emmy nominee for her performance in Apple TV+’s Palm Royale. What a woman!

So yep, there's so much to celebrate in the weeks leading up to the big night, which will be held on Monday September 16, 2024, so mark your calendars!
