'The unseen side of a turbulent marriage.' Everything we know about the new Priscilla biopic.

Just when we thought Elvis fever had reached, well, fever pitch, Sofia Coppola has released the trailer for her upcoming biopic, Priscilla. Yep, we haven’t heard the last of the King of Rock and his ex-wife, even after Baz Luhrmann’s heavily-peddled film Elvis in 2022.

Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, Coppola's film focuses' on the ‘Suspicious Minds’ singer’s much-younger other half. According to its synopsis, Priscilla “tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage.”

That courtship began when he was 24 and she was just 14, before he headed off to serve in the military for two years while stationed in Germany.

By the time she’d turned 21 in 1967, they were married, and two years later they welcomed their one and only child together, the late Lisa Marie. By 1973 the marriage was over. Four years after that, Elvis was dead.

“The hardest part of writing the script was just editing down so many incredible details from Priscilla's memoir,” Coppola told Vogue.

“I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland,” Coppola continued. “She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world – kinda similar to Marie Antoinette.”

Here’s what we know about the upcoming Priscilla.

Who’s playing Priscilla?

Cailee Spaeny is going to be the name on everyone’s lips come the film’s premiere.

Best known for her role in Mare of Easttown, the 24-year-old looks like she nails the part, if the trailer is anything to go by. She will have a lot to live up to given Priscilla herself heaped praise on Australian actress Olivia DeJonge who portrayed her in Elvis.

Something tells us the Presley matriarch won’t have anything to worry about in Spaeny, who Coppola handpicked herself. “The character goes from the age of 14 to 27 over the course of the film, so she had to be able to act and age across a big span of time,' the 51-year-old told Vogue.

“It was really important for me to have the same actress playing Priscilla at those different stages of her life, and I think Cailee can pull it off. She's such a strong actress, and she also looks very young.”

Who’s playing Elvis?

We wonder if Jacob Elordi ever pictured himself working with Coppola or portraying the King of Rock when he was just a schoolboy in Brisbane? Fast-forward seven years and the 25-year-old is doing just that.

Elordi is of the Hollywood heartthrob variety. Having dated a string of beautiful women, mostly models, he became every teen’s crush in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth franchise. He then went on to play the jock in controversial teen drama, Euphoria.

In 2023, Elordi has big, blue suede shoes to fill, following Austin Butler's highly praised portrayal of The King for which he was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe. "It was very emotional, my daughter felt the same way," Priscilla told Extra after viewing Luhrmann’s movie. "He got Elvis to a T, I mean to a T. It is unbelievable what this kid did, Austin. He spent two years studying about Elvis, so that was like a shock to watch.”

Can anyone compare to Austin Butler’s Elvis? Probably not, which is why Coppola was going for “magnetism” when she cast Elordi as the leading man. “I thought nobody was gonna look quite like Elvis, but Jacob has that same type of magnetism. He's so charismatic, and girls go crazy around him, so I knew he could pull off playing this type of romantic icon,” Coppola told Vogue.

Perhaps she caught a glimpse of Elordi dressed as the 'Hound Dog' singer alongside then-girlfriend Kaia Gerber as Priscilla when they dressed as the couple for Halloween. Ironically, soon after splitting with Elordi, Gerber went on to date Butler almost immediately.

Oh, and Gerber’s brother’s name is Presley. Can you keep up?

What does Priscilla Presley think?

Given how supportive she was of Baz Luhrmann’s masterpiece, one would assume Priscilla would think a second film within the year would be overkill. In fact, during pre-production there were whispers that she was against Coppola’s project. But during her interview with Vogue, the director confirmed Priscilla did have a role in the project – a very important one at that. “She's an executive producer! I've met with her a few times, and she's been incredibly open,” Coppola said.
