My home is my sanctuary, my little slice of heaven. I love coming home after being out and about and nestling in… but I am also never quite satisfied with the aesthetics. It might be clutter on the kitchen bench, the daggy curtains hanging limply or my sad fiddle leaf fig that doesn’t seem to want to grow (ever).

I'm constantly looking for ways to give my space an easy glow-up. After all, I am an independent woman who is convinced that I can do it all, especially when guided step-by-step by home DIY experts on TikTok.

Here's seven game-changing DIY hacks that will change your life, and your home.

Hanging sheer curtains higher than your door frames

Stylish window treatments don’t have to cost an arm and a leg any more — and the process doesn't need to be complicated either. When I saw Belle Bower hang her lush sheer white curtains from the top of her ceiling, well above the tops of her double doors, I immediately started investigating where and how to get my hands on some to make our ceilings appear higher in our own living space.

This is where an option like Half Price Blinds comes in handy, as they have a variety of custom-made blinds, curtains and shutters online to easily hang yourself — and at an affordable price point too, because cossie livs. After measuring your space and selecting your new treatment, they send your new curtains out to you with detailed DIY instructions for self-installation.

They have an Aussie-based customer service team if you want to double check anything over the phone which is great for me considering I need emotional support for the simplest DIY task. For the indecisive, Half Price Blinds also send out up to six free fabric samples so you can vibe check with your room before saying yes to the (window) dress…ing.

Stick-on tiles if you're a renter

This one is friendly for the renters: three words… stick-on tiles. You might have seen the viral green stick-on tiles (which are STUN) and so chic for the bathroom, but in this video, Style by Cari and Samuel show just how easy it is to use these stick-on tiles to completely change their splashback in the kitchen.

This hack also extends to the floor. Former US Vogue editor Jenna Rennert completely transformed the bathroom of her NYC rental into a chic space using adhesive floor tiles and then peeling them back off once it's time to move on. All you need to do is clean and de-grease the surface area and then place the stick on tiles one by one until your desired space is covered.

Stick-on strip lighting

If you are anything like me and simply refuse to turn on the 'big light' then this one's for you. Adhesive strip lighting is the ultimate hack to set the mood in a room and the best news, this one is renter friendly too. The best thing about this hack is that you can stick it pretty much anywhere but Joshua Archer gives us a step-by-step video of how to use and style strip lighting.

His top tips:

  1. Keep them out of sight by putting them behind furniture

  2. Instead of using the stick backing that comes on the lights, use painters tape to face the lights upwards rather than flush with the wall to increase range and colour of the lights

  3. Use them to create moody spaces in your room

Upcycling secondhand furniture

Sustainable, unique and personalised. Upcycling furniture is an easy home DIY project to give tired pieces of furniture a facelift. Australia's own Geneva Vanderziel is the internet's queen of upcycling, who shows us how easy it is with tips and tricks on how to see the potential in any piece.

A fresh lick of paint, stain or varnish can work wonders for a once sad shelf abandoned on the side of the road. There is nothing better than raiding Facebook Marketplace (or your parents storage shed) to find a sideboard or unique chair that needs some love. Well, maybe the only better feeling is being able to tell your gushing friends that "I upcycled it" with smug satisfaction.

Replacing your tapwear

Melbourne home and lifestyle creator Loui Burke shows us how easy it is to take a dated shower head and replace it with ease to elevate your shower. Don't call the plumber just yet — if your crusty old shower head is looking like it needs to go, then all you need to do is:

  1. Find a new showerhead with a similar attachment

  2. Unscrew the old fixture

  3. Use some plumbers tape around the spout to help ensure there are no drips or leaks

  4. Screw on the new show head

Storage maximisation

Need an extra shelf or two? Jess Ricci has you covered with an expandable tension shelf that uses pressure to hold itself up. All you do is screw the outer edges to the required size and make sure they are firmly pressed into the outer walls until it holds. You can put these literally anywhere that fits for an extra bit of storage. Not me adding 10 of these to my cart immediately.
