My dog just looks compleely unrepentant, but rolls over and exposes his tum, as if to say I know I did wrong but it was worth it....
Dogs have no concept of guilt and no natural capacity to link an action with an outcome if the two events are more than a few seconds apart. They are however masters at reading body language including voice tone. That dog knew it was in trouble by the owners tone of voice and probably some other body cues, but there is no way it knew why. All the behaviours the dog showed, were attempts to diffuse the anger it perceived in its owner, and to show submission.
Poor confused creature.
Actually, it's really not clear what emotions dogs experience, but it is clear that they can connect events more than a few seconds apart, and have memories. For example, if my dog's doggy friend has chewed something up in the back yard while we are out, my dog will "dob" her in, by running to the object and nosing it, and then running back to me at the door. It's obvious that she has seen the dog do it, remembered that things aren't supposed to be chewed and comes to tell us. BTW, these dogs are trained totally cruelty-free - only by positive reinforcement and saying "leave it" when some undesirable behaviour is going on (like too much barking, or sniffing someone's bum etc), so neither of them have ever been punished for chewing something.
That said - I have to say I didn't see the funny side of this video after about 5 seconds of seeing the "guilty" dog. I'm sure I'm being thin-skinned, but I don't really see the fun in making a dog suffer like that, whether it's really self-induced guilt or not. I think it was mean.
You're psycho-analysing a dog?!?! Seriously?!
Well my dog destroyed an antique book 2 and a half years ago and when I bring the remains out to show her now she puts her head down in shame and certainly acts guilty and remorseful.
