There is a time and a place for selfies. It's never, ever when you're delivering someone's child.

Ah, the miracle of birth.

The incredible moment you create a life. The incredible moment you push a tiny human out of your vagina.

The incredible moment a student doctor pauses to take a selfie with your naked, unassuming body and post it on the internet.

Way to ruin the moment, Dr Stoopid.

Daniel Sanchez, a student obstetrician in Venezuela, outraged the internet when he posted an Instagram photo of himself with a women in labour. Well, with her bottom half. He thoughtfully left her face out of it.

The photo was captioned, “Lady I can deliver your baby but first let me take a selfie.”  He later added that he can “bring kids into the world and reconstruct pussies”, and stitch women’s vaginas like a “brand new, like a car with zero kilometres on the clock”.

RUN, LADY. Get off that table and RUN to better doctors.

At least 5,000 people have signed an online petition demanding the hospital investigate the incident and take action, to “establish a precedent from which the new generations of professionals exercise their profession in the most absolute respect for the birthing women and their families, and their profession.”

Yep. That. Do that, hospital.

Sanchez (who has made his Instagram page private since making someone’s private parts public) defended himself by saying he clearly respected the woman in labour because “you cannot see her genitals or her face”, and that she gave consent, and that he didn’t even take the photo anyway (though the word “selfie” in the caption probably proves he’s lying a little bit).

Unfortunately, it’s not a rare occurence. Doctors posing with unaware patients has become a pesky problem (including the doctor who operated on Joan Rivers before she went into cardiac arrest).

Scrubs

Another doctor recently posted a photo stitching an unconscious new mother’s perineum, with the caption “someone will be in my eternal debt #thankfulhusbandsstich”, referring to the extra painful stitch that makes a woman’s vagina tighter and more pleasurable for a man. Because that’s a vagina’s primary job, after all.

Perhaps we should all get a no photographs sign tattooed on our lady parts. Or at the very least, check all the doctor’s Instagram accounts first. Any pictures of unsuspecting vaginas? Find a new doctor.

Big shout-out to the many doctors and nurses out there who respect women’s privacy. Stay cool, legends.

What do you think should happen to a doctor who abuses your trust like this?

Like this? Try these:

When doctors see something really weird, they post it here.

Joan Rivers’ doctor took a selfie,

This woman took a selfie of her own stroke.

This kind of thing hopefully wouldn't happen in Australia. The Australian Medical Association classes photographs to be health information and should only be taken with consent, and should also be treated under the same privacy and confidentiality rules as any other medical information.
