The average toddler does 6 hours of activity a day. The average 5 year old does 1.5.

Every day I watch my young children sitting on their butts hardly moving, except for their fingers frantically working remotes, keyboards, controls and pads.

Kids’ lives sure have changed in the past 30 years. And they’re definitely not getting as much activity as they used to.

The reality is that technology is here to stay. But that doesn’t mean our children have to become unhealthy hermits. As parents, we have the power to turn this around. We set the example and provide the guidance so our young children develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

And the best part about it is that being active is awesome fun.

Here are the facts behind the butt sitting, so you can quickly see where the problem lies and know what you can do about it.

My son watches less than 2 hrs a week of TV (Thanks daycare for putting movie on, and government for saying they need less screen time, but its ok to get the to watch TV there...)
He like to run around and play, but he is quiet the intraverted reader/lego engineer.

I have no idea how many steps it is a day, or any inclination to time the stop start of movement (he must be running, because im running around after him!). But i can assure you, its not "TV or Screen time" that is to blame! Some days we are more active - 5 hours at the park yesterday because we could - and somedays we have less intense activities.

ITS NOT JUST TV'S FAULT!

I'm thinking of getting a fitness tracker for myself - maybe I should get one for the kids too. Knowing how competitive my two are they;ll probably love trying to beat mum's step score for the day...
