Chrissy Amphlett, best known as the lead singer of Australian rock band the Divinyls, has died at 53-years-old.
The Divinyls formed during the 80s, and garnered world-wide fame in 1991 when their hit single ‘I Touch Myself’ reached number one in the Australian charts.
The band had four top 10 albums in Australia, and made it into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006.
Amphlett was well known for wearing provocative schoolgirl outfits while performing, as well as her feisty stage presence. She was one of her generation’s major rock voices, and her complex music – both vulnerable and ‘take no prisoners’ – inspired many women.
In 2007 Amphlett revealed that she was battling multiple sclerosis, and in 2010 began a battle with breast cancer. In 2011 she went into remission.
Amphlett grew up in Victoria, and then lived with her husband Charley Drayton – former Divinyls drummer – in New York.
Reports say that she died in New York surrounded by family.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the rock legend. RIP Chrissy Amphlett.

Heartbreaking. What a force; a great example of how to live your life.
My humble admiration.
I hope you have found heaven.
Still such an inspiration, even for a 20-something woman like me.
I was so inspired, I put together a tribute in honour of this amazing woman.
