There are two things Aussies love watching on TV.

Celebrity chefs whipping up delicious, intricate, gourmet meals... and everyday Australians attempting to cook.

SBS's hilarious new reality TV series Dishing It Up, combines both these things. The series follows six pairs of everyday Aussies as they watch the latest cooking shows and attempt to recreate the dishes in their own home.

Below we breakdown what Dishing It Up is about and give our verdict on whether you should watch it:

What is Dishing It Up about?

Dishing It Up puts celebrity chef recipes to the test with the toughest critics of all... home cooks.

We all love watching Jamie Oliver whip up 15 minute meals without breaking into a sweat, Nigella Lawson cook up the most intricate dishes using her... microwave (or mee-cro-wah-vay as she calls it), and Poh Ling Yeow handcraft the most perfect little dumplings in record time, but how many of these dishes can home cooks really recreate? And do they even work?

From burnt pans, to fire alarms, to questionable looking curry puffs, Dishing It Up shows the hilarious reality behind some of our favourite cooking shows.

Created by Michelle Galluzzo (Restaurant Australia), the series combines food and entertainment to create a show unlike anything we've seen on Australian TV before. There's something for everyone – new recipes for the budding home cooks, a whole new cast of relatable Australians to fall in love with, and plenty of laughs.

"Dishing It Up is a cooking show like no other. There’s no competition (apart from some healthy couple rivalry), no manufactured drama (apart from the occasional smoke alarm) and no prize (besides the bragging rights from the better home cook)," Galluzzo said in a statement.

"The beauty of Dishing It Up is that it’s real, raw and relatable – a stark contrast to the perfect, stylised celebrity chef cooking shows we’re used to."

The show features six pairs of ordinary Australians, from different generations, cultural backgrounds and cities. They all have one thing in common – their love of food and cooking.

There's highschool sweethearts Fiona and Jeremy, who bring their unique Asian-Australian perspective to the dishes. Hilarious husbands Stefan and Yash who are not afraid to critique the most-acclaimed chefs in the world. Egyptian mum and daughter Magda and Sara who love to bicker over the finer details. Inner-city parents Waz and Jen who aren't afraid to make a mess, best friends Anna and Matt who always have a cocktail (or two) on hand, and Jonathan and Hari, friends since school, who love the banter.

The pairs use their own cooking equipment in their own kitchens to recreate dishes from some of the biggest (Jamie Oliver, Maggie Beer) and most rogue chefs (Nat's What I Reckon, Uncle Roger) in the world... to varying degrees of success.

There will be burnt dishes. There will be sloppy messes. But most of all, there will be plenty of laughs.

Come for the...

The food. The series follows recipes from some of the best chefs from Australia and around the world including Nigella Lawson, Poh Ling Yeow and Nat's What I Reckon.

Stay for the...

The banter. The home cooks are absolutely hilarious, and you'll fall in love with them in no time.

What TV series will it remind you of?

The Cook and the Chef, Food Safari, Dinner Date, and The Cook Up with Adam Liaw
