“It’s special to see yourself like this.”
That was the reaction from one woman when she finally saw a mannequin resembling herself.
“Seeing it there for real is quite a shock,” was the reaction from another.
Why were these people so surprised to see themselves represented as mannequins? Because these people rarely, if ever, see themselves represented in any mainstream capacity.
Because these are people with disabilities.
But one organisation has decided to change that. Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled, created a series of mannequins based on real people with physical disabilities. They then placed the mannequins in a store windows all along the main shopping strip in Zurich.
The project, called “Because who is perfect? Get closer,” was designed to raise awareness on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

This is very cool - but the reactions of some of the regular passers-by were a sad reality check that western society really has a long way to go in terms of inclusion.
