'Deconstructed eyeliner' is apparently the new way to wear eye makeup. So, we tried it.

On the You Beauty podcast, we try a lotta different beauty hacks and trends.

And honestly, a lot of them are total poo. But once in a while, every now and then my co-host Leigh Campbell and I discover a ✨ golden nugget✨. That is, those kinds of beauty hacks that are actually good, and we would try again.

The 'deconstructed eyeliner' look is one of those trends.

Watch: You know what else we tried on You Beauty? The 'diamond lips' hack. Check it out below.

On this week's episode of You Beauty, we tried the viral 'deconstructed eye' look that's been getting around the runways and red carpets as of late.

It's miles away from our usual cat-eye flicks – and we have some thoughts.

So, here's what happened when Leigh and I tried the 'deconstructed eye' trend. (Don't be scared.)

What is 'deconstructed eyeliner'?

Ah! Yes. A good place to start. 'Deconstructed eyeliner' sounds kinda fancy, but it's basically like a cross between a smokey eye and eyeliner.

It's made its way from the recent Dior catwalk and onto the world of TikTok, with people rating it for being easy, but looking really cool.

It's the perfect makeup look for winter and has a strong, cool-girl punk vibe that's supposed to make your eyes pop from a distance (and up close).

The trend has absolutely blown up on TikTok, with makeup artist Victoria Lyn posting a simple tutorial on how to nail the look. All you need is an eyeliner and an eyeshadow brush.

Check it out below:

Looks pretty good, right?!

How do you do it?

Using an eyeliner pencil (kohl liner works best because it's more blendable), shut your eye and draw across your bottom and top lash line. Sounds terrifying, but it’s okay to look messy – that's the point!

Leigh's weapon of choice was a black eyeliner from Flavio and Albedo ($27) and I used a Charlotte Tilbury Rock 'n Kohl in Barbarella Brown ($36).

Next, you're going to take a pencil brush (I used a small eyeshadow brush because I messed up, and it still worked) and start to smoke out the inner corner and outer corner of your eye, joining them together in the middle.

With the outer corner of your eye, you can either just blend it out across your eyes for a smokey look or blend it up towards the end of your brow tail for a soft cat eye, to give it some lift.

If you want to clean up any lines, take a note out of Leigh's book and use micellar water and a cotton tip to tidy things up. Smart!

The verdict.

Honestly, it worked out way better than I expected. Both Leigh and I were kind of surprised!

While it's probably more of a 'going out'/night eye look (I felt a bit funny walking into a 10am meeting with it!), it definitely made our eyes pop, and kind of levelled up our usual makeup look.

Here's what we looked like after trying the hack:

I'm notoriously boring with my eye shadow looks (there's always lots of brown, beige, and neutral colours going on) and when it comes to eyeliner, I always stick to my liquid wing (it's Leigh's go-to eye look as well).

However, I really enjoyed shaking it up with this hack and think it's perfect for winter. I think I'll stick to the brownish-coloured liner, as it compliments the colour of my eyes – but overall, I will definitely be trying it again.

Yay for makeup trends that end up being good!

This hack actually made me feel really nostalgic and took me back to 2010 Erin, who was a BIG, LOUD fan of black eyeliner on her upper and lash line (thanks, Lauren Conrad). But, as TikTok and the Y2k trend have proved, everything old is new again.

Guess I better dust off those headbands...
