Animals invading a sporting field are normally adorable, or at least a bit of fun, but the Copenhagen football derby’s latest entry falls right in the realm of disgusting.
In the championship group of the Danish Superliga, a clash between Brondby and FC Copenhagen took a turn for the gross when a couple of dead rats came flying down from the stands.
With his side up 1-0 in the final minutes, Ludwig Augustinsson was lining up a corner kick when some rodents were launched his way, believed to have been thrown by Brondby fans.
Luckily, it appears none of them hit him, but he and goal-scorer Benjamin Verbic still had to become temporary members of pest control.
They tried to kick the rats from the pitch, before getting some help from stewards.
Brondby sports director Troels Bech condemned the few fans who were ruining the “electric” atmosphere at the ground.
“We are obviously annoyed that we had to leave the field without points, but it is equally unfortunate that there are some visitors for today’s match who could not figure out how to behave properly,” he wrote in a statement.
“We will now look all the video material and pictures … [and] will engage in dialogue with groups of supporters in the hope that together we can identify the right person and make sure he/she gets removed from the stadium.
“We have Denmark’s most atmospheric football stadium and … by far the best fans, and a single individual should not ruin it for the greater community.”
Hopefully the investigation uncovers, not just who threw the rats, but whether they brought dead rats from home, or killed them at the stadium.
