There’s nothing that takes up residence on your face quite like a sleepless night.

From dark circles to redness and irritation, it can be hard to look like you’ve had eight hours sleep after you’ve spent the night tossing and turning, or a looming work deadline has kept you from your pillow. Not to mention those later-than-expected nights out that take their toll (yep, we’ve all had them).

To help you out, here are seven tips and tricks that will freshen up your face and help your tired soul make it through the day.

1. Eye masks make all the difference.

If you’re facing a long workday after a run of sleepless nights, popping on some eye patches while you go about your normal morning routine is a soothing way to get some instant relief. Just ask the likes of Kim Kardashian or Chrissy Teigen, who both work long hours, look after their broods of children and always have to be camera-ready.

Kim favours eye patches infused with retinol, collagen, aloe, and hyaluronic acid to thicken the under-eye area and disguise discolouration. While Chrissy is a fan of patches with a combination of vitamins B3 and E, and pro-vitamin B5 that work together to hydrate the eye area.

2. Use eye drops to clear away the redness.

There’s not a lot of point slathering make-up over tired eyes when your eyes themselves look a little bloodshot.

There are specific eye drops out there that can help reduce the visual appearance of blood vessels by removing the redness and brightening up your eyes.

Keep some drops, such as Murine Clear Eyes, at the ready and just squeeze one or two drops into each eye up to four times a day.

These drops will take the redness out of your tired eyes for up to eight hours. It’s particularly good if you’ve been out partying and need to look like you haven’t the next day.

3. Conceal don’t feel, don’t let those dark circles show.

First of all, the trick here is to ensure you apply your foundation first so that you can apply less concealer to your already fragile skin. If you’re working through life with only a few hours sleep, the best way to apply your concealer is to draw a triangle with the base sitting under your eye and the point going down towards your cheek.

This particular concealer shape not only conceals dark circles, but it can also create the illusion that your face is lifted and less tired.

4. Don’t spill the tea, just pop it on your eyes.

It’s pretty common knowledge that cucumber slices can soothe tired and irritated eyes and the skin around them. However, it’s time to kick this practice up a notch and add some tea bags into the mix. If you’re suffering from some late-night induced dark under-eye circles then the caffeine found in black or green tea bags can help narrow blood vessels and reduce blue colouring under the eye.

Just be aware that caffeinated teas will help with bloat by drawing out the fluid, and a tea such as a chamomile will be more soothing. Allow the tea bags to cool then gently place them on your eyes.

5. Scrub the pain away.

OK, so the last thing you might want to do after arising from a bad night’s sleep is scrub your face, but it could actually be the best and quickest way to get a healthy glow going.

Exfoliation will help to remove dead skin, increase blood circulation, break down toxins and will encourage new skin cells to come through and make you look a little more alive. Just ensure that you use a good serum afterwards to soothe your newly scrubbed skin.

6. Light is just right when it comes to eye make-up.

If you're in the midst of a crazy work week and it’s cutting into your bedtime, then the last thing you want to do in the morning is slather on lots of heavy, dark eye make-up.

One beauty trick that will make you feel a little more pulled together and awake is dabbing a hint of white or light cream eye shadow right in the inner corners of your eyes.

It will make you look instantly more alert and wide-eyed.

7. Keep your face mist on you at all times.

There are lots of tips and tricks you can slip into your morning beauty routine that will help you feel and look more awake, but what about when you’re slumped over your desk with 3pm fatigue and feel like your skin is peeling off? In this case, keeping a face mist tucked in your bag is your secret weapon.

Face mists can be used to hydrate your skin throughout the day and lessen the strain of a sleepless week. The key is in the ingredients, so look for a mist packed with rosewater and aloe, as they have anti-inflammatory properties that can calm irritated skin and redness.

What are your beauty tips and tricks for the week's when you don't get enough sleep?
