Newlyweds who live in a 'cubby house' prove it's possible to live outside the norm.

The housing market has proven much too competitive for plenty of young couples. But a pair of New South Wales newlyweds have come up with a very unique way to carve out a little slice of the Australian dream. And by little we mean tiny.

Brenton Porter and Elsie Stuart live in a cubby house on Elsie’s mother’s property. That means no bathroom, no kitchen – just a loft bedroom and a small living area.

Despite the tiny 3x3.7m footprint, the Hunter Valley couple are perfectly content with their cosy home.

"We have so many beautiful memories in here," Elsie told The Daily Mail. "It will always be my paradise."

The cubby was bult 20 years ago for her and her siblings to play in, but has served many different functions since.

"Over the years it has been lots of things, it was a study for my sister in the HSC, it was a cubby for all of us and my brothers decked it out and slept in there when they were teenagers and needed their own space."

When Elsie's father died ten years ago, the little building was neglected somewhat, serving as her mother's storage shed.

When Brenton and Elsie's brothers restored it to its former glory, the weatherboard cubby started to reveal its potential as a home.

"We moved in without a second thought," said Elsie. "I have an antique shop so I never had much furniture I would just use things I liked from there for a little while so it wasn't too hard to downsize."

They admit it does get pretty cold in the winter, and they have to run over to Elsie's mother's place to cook and use the bathroom, but they still wouldn't have it any other way.
