'I tried that concealer hack you're seeing everywhere. And the results were... surprising.'

In news that surprises absolutely no one, TikTok is full of some very questionable beauty ‘hacks’. Like, some of them are terrible and downright dangerous (I'm lookin' at you, nasal tanning sprays).

As a beauty editor and co-host of You Beauty news, I try a lot of these viral beauty hacks so that you don’t have to (you're welcome, friends). And look, most of them are terrible. 

But you know what? Hidden deep amongst all the confusing mess of DIY mole removal and teeth filing, are some nuggets. Some golden nuggets. And this viral concealer hack is one of them.

I just want to preface this by saying I really didn’t want to like this concealer hack. It looked fiddly, time-consuming, kinda silly and extremely questionable.

But then I tried it. And I tried it again. And now I can’t stop using it. 

And you know what? I have an inkling you might like it, too.

Hang on. What's the viral concealer hack?

Oh, sorry! How rude of me. You haven't heard of it? You must've had your headphones in our something, cause it's everywhere right now.

Let me explain. 

In a nutshell, this viral concealer hack is all about how the tactical placement of your concealer can give your face a more 'lifted' appearance.

It all started here, on TikTok, where a user by the name of Sarah Wolak posted this tutorial:

Did you watch it? Looks like a work of art, huh?

As you can probably expect, the clip received millions of views - and for good reason. 

The way Wolak strategically applies her concealer undoubtedly boosts her entire appearance, highlighting her bone structure and just making everything look snatched AF.

She starts with her foundation already on and applies a touch of cream bronzer to her cheeks - explaining that this will act as an outline of where to apply the concealer.

Using the cult Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Multi-Use Concealer, she basically starts at the outer corner of her eye and runs a thick line underneath, moving down the outside of her nose, cheekbones and Cupid's bow, before finishing at her chin.

An actual Picasso.

She then blends it all in with a foundation brush, before going over it again with a damp beauty sponge.

Everything ends up looking seamless and amazing - so of course I had to give it a go for myself.

Well, go on then - what happened? Did it work?

As I've told you more times than necessary, I'm very lazy when it comes to makeup. And this particular hack looks like it involves way too much effort.

ANYHOO, I tried it.

I used the new KVD Good Apple Lightweight Full Coverage Concealer, $42 - because it's super thick and creamy and seemed like the appropriate weapon for such shenanigans. 

If you're looking for what kind of concealer to go for, I'd opt for something similar with an applicator that holds a fair amount of product.

Following the original tutorial, I started with foundation (Charlotte Tilbury's Beautiful Skin Foundation, to be exact) and cream bronzer (Milk Makeup Matte Bronzer) already on my face (as well as mascara and eyeliner), before applying concealer on one side of my face first (so I could compare!).

Looking at the video, you're supposed to start on the outer corner of your eye. 

For reasons unknown, I started in the ~middle~ and swept the line underneath my eyes, down my nose, along my cheekbone and down my chin.

Then, I just buffed the lines with a foundation brush, starting underneath my eyes and following the line all the way down to my chin. 

I then used my damp beauty sponge to go over the line again, blending it into my skin.

The result? 

I have to say - I bloody rate it. 

Y'see, I often find contouring with cream bronzer to be too scary (my face always tends to look muddy and patchy), but positioning the concealer this way makes everything look really seamless and lifted.

Oh, but I have! Many times, in fact. While it might be a little much for my everyday makeup look, I've used this concealer trick almost every time I've done my makeup to 'go out' (events, lunches, drinks with friends etc) recently.

I'm not much of a matte girl (too dry), so I usually follow with cream blush and a glossy highlighter to give my skin a little more glow and dimension. 

But, yeah - I honestly rate it.

Brighter! More lifted!  

The difference may be subtle, but I just find it makes everything look more structured and seamless - lifting up my brows and cheekbones, while brightening and camouflaging dark spots and discolouration. 

And I'm so surprised how effortless it actually is - once you get the hang of it, it honestly takes way less time than you'd expect.
