The child abuse royal commission has heard disturbing evidence that junior defence recruits were molested for years as part of cruel “initiation” rituals.
During the first day of a public hearing into the Australian Defence Force, survivors gave evidence that they were warned not to report the abuse.
Abuse at the ADF training facilities was systemic and spanned decades, the commission heard.
The latest royal commission case study is focusing on HMAS Leeuwin from 1960 to 1980, the Army Apprentice School Balcombe in the period 1970 to 1980 and ADF Cadets since 2000.
A witness known as CJA, a survivor of child sexual abuse, was the first to give evidence at the inquiry, but did so through his solicitor.
The hearing was told he was subjected to vicious assaults by other recruits at HMAS Leeuwin in Western Australia in 1967, but was warned by the navy chaplain not to “rat” on the perpetrators.
He said he escaped from the base, and was punished again when he was returned.
“At night I was physically and sexually abused multiple times by the navy police,” he said through his solicitor.
“The sexual abuse consisted of oral sex, masturbation and buggery.
“I felt I had no choice but to surrender to this abuse.”

ADFC instructors are NOT members of the ADF, they are volunteers working in units affiliated with and funded by the Department of Defence. The awful story of the girl from Hobart is being commonly misreported (though not above) in stating she joined the RAAF at 14. She was an Australian Airforce Cadet (not an ADF/RAAF member) and the instructor who engaged in a relationship with her was NOT ADF. The fact that the moron convinced this poor child she could be 'dishonourably discharged' (not even a thing in Australian ADF, let alone for cadets aged 12-18) makes me want to vomit. I can only imagine her fear and humiliation as a 14 y.o cast aside after she had been abused by someone she should have been able to trust to keep her safe. I am still confused as to how this man wasn't charged with having a relationship with a minor.
These survivors have courage beyond measure. All power to them and I hope there is justice. May the abuse stop
