To finish up the year that was, we’re going to bring you the most popular Mamamia posts of 2013. It’s like a countdown, an advent calendar of sorts, but one that gets your through the post-Christmas blur and into the new year. We’ve been lucky to have some truly wonderful writers join us to share their thoughts on Mamamia this year. This is the very, very best of what they had to offer. Enjoy.
“I’m just calling to talk about this whole Adam Goodes thing with Eddie McGuire and all that. I just wanted to say that I don’t think racism is that bad in Australia I just think it’s not such a big deal.”
-Jan from Hawthorn, white, first time caller, long time listener.
I know nothing about racism in Australia.
I cried with pride when an Australian Prime Minister finally apologised to the stolen generation on behalf of the Australian government.
I remember clearly the day that Nicky Winmar lifted his shirt to show how proud he was of his black skin. And I know why, for a significant and important part of our national community, January 26 is not a day of celebration.
But I know nothing about racism in Australia.
I know that until the 1967 referendum altered our constitution to include all Australians as enfranchised citizens, our first peoples were regulated by the Flora & Fauna Act. I know that this classification of Indigenous Australians as animals wasn’t just offensive on face value, but enabled the brutalisation and murder of countless human beings in a long, dark period of our history that should be remembered with shame.

I'm so confused by Charlie Pickering. His show invites shock jocks to spread misinformation on a regular basis (particularly on Climate Change and refugee migration issues) but he occasionally indicates he'd know better than providing such a platform for politically motivated racial discrimination/hate mongering and denialist memes promoting climate destruction. Consequently I find his sometimes thoughtful Project unwatchable because of the regular crassness and uncritical presentation of unfactual material.
I guess he takes his orders on guests from Ten (and therefore Gina). Marcia Langton is also heavily vested in the mining industry and it's agenda to dig up anything it can get a dollar for even if it destroys the local environment and/or global climate. Strange he cites her as the Aboriginal intellectual/scholar of note, certainly she has a standout career and trajectory in public life. I'd look to others like the Dodson brothers first though.
II haved lived in Australia my whole life, never thought that Australia as a whole or any austrlians were racist. It was until I had a relationship with my daughter's father who is from Zambia that I noticed how racist people actually are. unfortunately for my daughter Things can be worse as she is mixed and the attitude I found some people don't think you should mix races. My daughter earlier this year had a racist comment made to her by a school friend. "I'm going to put you (and her friend who is also African/Australian) in a rubbish bin and send you back to your own country so you can never come back again" considering my daughter iI only in preprimary (5yrs old) I felt sick to my sstomach that at such a young age they can already think like that
