The first images of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot, the The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are here, and the iconic 90s sitcom looks very different.
This darker iteration of the story follows the Archie Comics graphic novel of the same name and will be set in the 1960s, in the same universe as Netflix’s Riverdale.
However, as it is made 20 years after the hit TV show, we can forget the inspiration 90s fashion, and family friendly comedy we all watched as kids because this new iteration dives right into the show’s occult and blood-curdling subject matter.
While fans will have to wait till October 26 for the show to drop on the streaming giant, the show runners have shared the first two promo photos for the drama and they’re very intriguing.
The first image features Sabrina getting baptised into the occult by the character Father Blackwood. From this shot it looks like we can expect a dark and moody reboot that gives off more of a The Vampire Diaries vibe.
The second photo is a shot of Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina, and her maroon ensemble is giving us definite Little Red Riding Hood vibes. We also can't help but notice Shipka's similarity to Melissa Joan Hart who starred in the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch series - and while we'll miss our Sabrina in her classic 90s grunge outfits (like her signature choker), we'll let this one slide.
Unfortunately, at the moment there's not much information about the series reboot - and we're still waiting for the trailer to drop - but this is what we can expect judging from the comic series:
- It's going to be a lot witchier and the occult themes will be a lot more prominent. In fact, Joan Hart called it a "teen angst soap opera" and compared it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer when she appeared on the Steve TV Show.
- Sabrina might be a cannibal. This follows the comics in which the witches are part-time cannibals (they also eat normal 'human food') and this is why Zelda and Hilda (Sabrina's aunts) live near a cemetery.
- There will be many new characters, including a villain in the form of Madam Satan and Father Blackwood who is the High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts.
- There's definitely room for a Riverdale crossover. In the original Archie universe Riverdale's Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge are two witches from the High Priestess Grundy's coven from a neighboring village and while the teen show hasn't introduced any supernatural themes into its plot as of yet, this could make for some very interesting viewing material.
Watch the original Sabrina - Melissa Joan Hart - talk about the brand new reboot.
We'll have to wait until October 26 to see if these theories will come into play, but for now we are very excited for the premier of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The Sabrina comic from not that long ago ended with Sabrina summoning Cthulhu, so it's been heading in a dark direction for a while now.
The show from whence my name came. Ugh, 'reboots' never work, why do people bother? There can only be one Sabrina and of course, only one Salem. And turning it into an occult thing? No. Just.....NO! This whole reboot makes me angry, and THIS Salem will never watch the reboot.
