Lisa has an intellectual disability. This is what she wants her future boss to know.

Lisa Buckley has worked in a butcher shop, a restaurant washing dishes, and a cafe selling all types of coffee. She's worked with cash registers, hard machinery, and even a few snarky customers. 

Lisa can do most jobs. She knows she can. 

Lisa just wants a boss - and colleagues - who will give her the chance to prove it to them.

"I want to work somewhere that is kind to me and good to me," she tells Mamamia. "I have a lot to offer, I just need them to give me a chance."

Lisa, 37, has ADHD and a mild intellectual disability. It doesn't stop her from ever getting a job done; it just means she needs more time to understand. 

In the past, Lisa has struggled with employers throwing her into new roles and responsibilities without adequate training. She tells Mamamia the right place for her will come along, eventually.

With International Day of People with Disability having just gone by, Lisa wrote a letter to her future boss, detailing everything she wants them to know. 

This is her letter.

Dear Future Boss,

My name is Lisa Buckley.

I have a mild intellectual disability where I like someone giving me 1:1 training and patiently showing me what to do a few times. I like when there is a process and routine. When someone rushes me, I make mistakes. I don’t want people to get angry when I make mistakes.

Just because I look like everyone else doesn’t mean I don’t have a disability. I can’t just be thrown into a job. I once worked in a shop and they put me straight on the cash register even though I said I wasn’t comfortable. They didn’t train me and I felt really stressed.

I just want people to see me. I am intelligent and capable. As soon as I have learnt the job I will do a good job. I take criticism well and enjoy being praised. If I had a job that I loved, it would mean the world to me. I would feel more confident. I would enjoy getting up and having something to do. Some of my friends work and I am happy for them.

If I got a job, I would go out to lunch to celebrate with some friends and then open a bottle of champagne with my mum.

For my first paycheck, I would buy a new dress or swimming costume. I also want to save up to go on an overseas holiday with my friends.

People underestimate me. People think the worst about me. I just want a job where they appreciate me, will give me a go and will see what I can do - as I will surprise them. I have so much to offer.
