Human remains have been found in bushland on the NSW mid-north coast, four hours’ drive north of Sydney.

A Rural Fire Service crew made the gruesome discovery about 6am on Thursday on Yarratt Road after they put out a small fire in the Yarratt State Forest near Taree, police said.

The remains are believed to be those of an adult and a crime scene has been established.

There are no recent reports of anyone missing in the area and investigators are checking lists of long-term missing persons, the Daily Mail reports.

A post-mortem will be conducted to identify the body and determine a cause of death, police said.

The body was found in an area 45 mins drive away from where three-year-old William Tyrrell disappeared from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall in September 2014.

Listen to The Quicky debrief on the truth about William Tyrrell’s parents, and what happened after the three-year-old’s disappearance.
