I always feel a bit sorry for the older kids in these very large families. They're expected to pitch in with considerably more chores/child caring from a young-ish age than they would have in a smaller family, and are effectively losing out on their own childhoods to help their parents out.

Don't be so judgmental, you surely can't know what you are claiming the older kids are going through. What you claim happens in small families too and older kid loses childhood cause parents are immature, so no reason big family parents can't be able to manage and get help by employing a nanny and other help without forcing older kids to do all the chores. I have actually seen that happen 1st hand in few bigger families.
