The best thickening shampoo under $20.

Fact: Dropping a whole heap of cash on a product that doesn't work is a just very sad time for everyone involved (you). You see all the glowing reviews on social media, finally cave in and buy it only to notice... nothing.

And it sucks. Heaps.

So when we hear a recommendation from someone that we actually trust – ahem, Kelly McCarren from You Beauty podcast – you're going to bet we're taking note.

Because on a recent episode, our friend Kelly recommended the one treatment she rates for thinning hair – and it's under $20.

What's the best thickening shampoo?

We know, we know. Way to draw it out.

It's the John Frieda PROfiller+ Thickening Shampoo, and at the time of writing, you can grab it from Chemist Warehouse for $10.

We love to see it.

"My savey was inspired by a Q&A box I did on Instagram a couple of weeks ago," shared Kelly. "I often get some beauty questions filtering through."

"Someone said, 'Can you help me – my hair has thinned out so much postpartum. I'm looking for something that's thickening, but I really don't have much disposable income. I would love a savey option. Everything I've recommended so far for postpartum has been quite expensive. Where are the affordable options?'"

FEELS.

"John Frieda has recently launched a product called PROfiller+ Thickening Shampoo, and also conditioner. Full price they're about 20 bucks, but it's available at the supermarket and the chemists so you can usually get it a lot more affordable.

"The shampoo and conditioner are formulated with biotin, which is an ingredient that a lot of mascara or lash growth/eyebrow growth products have because it's known to provide hair strengthening. This means that it's not going to break off as easily. It's also got hyaluronic acid in it, which is really good for hydrating your hair."

Now, for the million-dollar/20-dollar question... does it actually make your hair thicker?

"Firstly, I can't say because I have my weaves in still," shared Kelly. "But I can say, hand on heart, it's a beautiful shampoo and conditioner.

"I've used it for the past couple of weeks and it feels really nice and does a good job of cleaning and hydrating your hair, and the clinical studies and research behind this product swayed me to think that it probably will work at least a little bit, and it can't hurt to try.

"And it's a LOT more affordable than some of the other ones that I've been chatting about over the past two years. So, I definitely think that this range is worth a go."

For as little as $10, it's worth a shot.

An important thing to remember here, though, is that the hair loss/hair thinning game is complex and layered. There are so many factors that are involved, and it's different for everyone. So, just keep in mind that what might work for one person may not work for someone else.

As always, if you're experiencing more hair loss than usual, it may be worth checking in with your GP or a trichologist (aka scalp expert) to suss out any underlying issues.

So there you have it!

Bye, see you next time, love you xx
