The best new TV shows of 2023 so far, according to Mamamia's pop culture editor.

I'm obsessed with TV.

Murder mysteries. Prestige dramas. Sitcoms. Dark British comedies. The lot.

Thankfully, I've made it part of my ~ personal brand ~ so I no longer feel bad about hiding in my apartment all weekend, watching strangers solve murders on the telly.

This means I've basically watched every new TV show that has been released in 2023 so far and I can tell you exactly what's worth your time and what's not. So, you know, bookmark this page for your future, super-organised self. (P.S. if you'd like to see my weekly recommendations, follow me on Instagram).

Here are the best new TV shows of 2023 so far:

Daisy Jones & The Six

If you haven't found yourself listening to Fleetwood Mac's 'Silver Springs' on repeat in the last few weeks, you've been missing out!

Daisy Jones & The Six is a 10-part series, based on the bestselling book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which is loosely based/inspired by the story of iconic 70s rock band, Fleetwood Mac.

In 1977, Daisy Jones & The Six were on top of the world. But after a sold-out show at Chicago's Soldier Field, they mysteriously parted ways.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a story about incredibly highs, shocking lows, lost loves, and learning to let go.

The Last of Us

On the surface, The Last of Us is a series about a zombie apocalypse brought on by... mushrooms.

The series, which is based on the hugely popular video game of the same name, is set in 2023. It's 20 years onto a pandemic, initiated by a mass fungal infection, which turns its hosts into zombie-like creatures. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler, is tasked with escorting teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

But underneath the mushroom zombies, the series is really about human connection and how we rebuild our lives after all our humanity has seemingly been taken from us.

Poker Face is a murder-of-the-week series with a twist.

The 10-part series stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, a casino hotel cleaner who has the uncanny ability to tell when someone is lying.

After her workmate is murdered, Charlie hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and at every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange murder she can't help but solve.

It's a funny, unexpected series that will make you nostalgic for the TV shows you grew up with.

Class of 07

If you asked me what my worst nightmare is, I would probably tell you it's attending my high school reunion and becoming... trapped there.

Nobody wants to relive their sweatiest, pimpliest, most awkward days, especially forever, but that's exactly the premise of Prime Video's new original series, Class of 07

The series follows - you guessed it - the class of 07 of an all-girls boarding school who return to their old campus for their 10-year reunion.

While the women are partying in the school hall, an apocalyptic flood traps them on the campus, where they must learn how to fend for themselves and also revisit the trauma of their teen years.

Starring Caitlin Stasey, Emily Browning, and Steph Tisdell, Class of 07 is a laugh out loud 'pocco' comedy with a lot of heart.

Class of 07 is streaming on Prime Video.

Created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein (yes, Roy Kent) Shrinking feels like the quirky love child of Ted Lasso and Scrubs

The 10-part comedy drama follows Jimmy Laird (Segel), a therapist who is grieving the death of his wife, while trying to look after his teenage daughter.

To deal with his own grief, Jimmy starts telling his patients what he really thinks. The results are unexpected. For both Jimmy and his patients.

Shrinking is streaming on Apple TV Plus.

What happens when a fan's obsession goes too far?

That's the question posed by Swarm, the dark psychological thriller created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers for Prime Video.

The series is loosely based on Beyonce's experience with her 'Beyhive' and it follows the story of Dre, a young woman who is obsessed with a fictional popstar called Ni'Jah.

Dre is an active member fo Ni'Jah's 'Swarm' but soon her obsession with popstar becomes more sinister.

Rain Dogs is the first TV show of 2023 to receive a 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The gritty, British series is an unconventional love story between a single mum, her nine-year-old daughter and a privileged gay man.

Starring Daisy May Cooper and newcomer Fleur Tashjian, Rain Dogs offers a rare glimpse into the lives of people who are usually ignored, and proves that family is what you make it.
