Where were you last time you watched Netflix?
On the couch? In your bed? How about on the loo in a public toilet?
If that last question repulsed you, prepare to have your faith in your fellow man shaken to its core.
Eight percent of Netflix users are watching on public toilets. Yes, about one in 12 of us are watching Stranger Things 2 or our other favourite shows, movies and docos on the dunny – in public.
Listen: Is Netflix’s new Margaret Atwood adaption as good as The Handmaid’s Tale? The Binge weighs in. (Post continues.)
As someone who avoids public toilets, and tries to spend as little time in them as possible, it’s difficult to comprehend why so many Aussies would want to spend enough time to be worth whipping out their phone for.
And if this is you, no judgement. (Except actually, just a little bit of judgement.)
The disgusting truth is Australians are streaming on the public loo at a higher rate than the rest of the world. (The international average is seven per cent of users.)
This startling fact came from data Netflix recently released about its customers’ viewing habits. The streaming service found more and more of us are watching on the go, with 59 per cent of Aussies accessing Netflix in public. Popular spots are on our way to work, on a plane or at a cafe or restaurant.
Of course, watching in public doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Netflix users have told of how they had a show spoiled by glancing at a stranger’s screen at the wrong moment, and about one in five of those who are embarrassed about what they’ve been caught watching will attempt to cover the screen, or another one in five will turn the show off.
Maybe that’s why so many of us feel compelled to go to the toilet to watch our favourite guilty pleasure.
