'A loud bang.' Why the Qantas flight from Auckland to Sydney sent out a mayday call.
A Qantas plane has landed in Sydney after issuing a mayday call over the Pacific Ocean.
Emergency services rushed to the aircraft as it landed at Sydney Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
QF144 from Auckland issued the distress call after an in-flight emergency when the plane suffered an engine failure, AAP understands. A Qantas spokesperson told ABC the flight experienced an issue with one of its engines about an hour from its destination.
After the aircraft landed, two yellow airport fire appliances drove out to escort it to a parking spot.
NSW Ambulance confirmed its paramedics responded to a mayday alert issued by the flight from Auckland to Sydney.
Passengers on the flight said they heard a loud bang as one of its engines failed mid-air – but said they were unaware of the seriousness of the situation until after they landed. As reported by Daily Mail, the pilot shook the hand of all 145 passengers as they left the aircraft.
"I heard just a bang and maybe a slight shudder but that was it. We had no idea at the time, we didn't realise the whole engine had gone, we just heard a bang."
Federal Transport Minister Catherine King lauded the airline's safety record after a brief scare that had 100,000 people tracking the flight online.
"A relief to know that QF144 has landed safely," she tweeted. "Well done to the highly experienced crew for getting the plane safely home. Australia's aviation industry is among the safest in the world because of the dedicated staff working on planes and behind the scenes."
FlightRadar indicated the 10-year-old, twin-jet Boeing 737-800 plane travelling was over the Pacific Ocean when the call was issued.

"A mayday call is an internationally recognised, emergency or distress call," a spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority told AAP.
The call is issued when a flight is in grave and imminent danger and needs immediate assistance, according to Airservices Australia.
Once the call is issued controllers alert aviation rescue, firefighting and emergency services with details on how to respond. They also provide assistance to pilots.
"As a precaution Sydney Airport had emergency crews on stand-by including firefighters, ambulance and police," a spokesperson told AAP.
Aviation expert Neil Hansford told Sky News that "Qantas has never had a passenger lost on a jet aircraft in its history".
"What you may well find when the aircraft lands is that it may be prudence, rather than an uncontrollable situation."
Mr Hansford also said Boeing 737s can fly and land on only one engine.

Investigators share what they think happened when campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill were killed.
Accused double murderer Greg Lynn allegedly returned to a scene of the crime twice as police investigated the disappearance of Melbourne campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.
The couple, childhood sweethearts who rekindled their relationship later in life, vanished while camping in the remote Wonnangatta area in March 2020.
It's alleged Lynn killed them sometime after 6pm on March 20 before setting fire to their Bucks Camp campsite, where he was also set up. The 56-year-old former airline pilot has pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder.
A summary of police evidence, released in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, sets out some of the allegations against Lynn but does not outline details of how or why they say he killed the pair.
But police allege the circumstances of their deaths and Lynn's behaviour afterwards is consistent with him having intended to kill them, or at least cause really serious injury.
It's alleged Lynn contaminated and staged the crime scene, intentionally destroyed evidence and removed evidence before disposing of the couple's remains. Police allege Lynn put a gas bottle inside the couple's tent and set fire to their camp, before packing up his own campsite.
Officers believe it's likely Lynn put the bodies in a box trailer he was towing before disposing of them as he left the area on the Dargo side of the Wonnangatta Track via Grant Junction.
"In May 2020 and/or November 2020, the accused returned to the bodies of Hill and Clay, where he further tampered with the human remains to dispose of the deceased," the document alleges. "This involved burning, dispersing and partially interring them."
Police used listening devices and phone intercepts during their investigation and allege Lynn was overheard having conversations with himself, referring to the deaths of Mr Hill and Ms Clay.
Mr Hill was reported missing by his wife on March 21 and the burnt-out campsite was found on March 27. Ms Clay was reported missing the following day, leading police to discover they'd been camping together.
Their bodies were not recovered until November 29, 2021 – a week after Lynn was arrested.
The campsite was re-examined by police in March 2022 leading to the discovery of bone and lead fragments.
In a committal hearing, testing the evidence against Lynn, his barrister Dermot Dann KC referred to a potential scenario considered by police involving Mr Hill grabbing Lynn's shotgun.
"The two were wrestling over the gun causing an accidental discharge, or causing discharge, which struck Ms Clay in the head while positioned on the (passenger) side of Mr Hill's vehicle," he described.
Victoria Police forensic officer Mark Gellatly said evidence found on Mr Hill's car was consistent with that as a possibility but couldn't be ruled in or out.
"It's a possible explanation at this point," Mr Gellatly replied.
The hearing is set to continue next week.

Mum-of-two found dead in Sydney apartment remembered as "kind-hearted and selfless".
A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder after a young mother-of-two was found dead inside a western Sydney unit.
The body of 28-year-old Dayna Isaac was found in a Penrith unit on Monday afternoon.
Her burned-out car was found in bushland nearby and is being examined.
The NSW Police tactical operations unit arrested the 32-year-old man at a house 5km away in Cranebrook yesterday morning.
"We are aware that there was a relationship between the two," Acting Superintendent Carlene Mahoney told reporters.
"It was a long relationship as a friendship and recently become more intimate over the last couple of months and that's as far as we're aware."
Dayna, who was the mother of two young girls, has been remembered as the "most beautiful, kind-hearted and selfless" person, a close friend of Dayna's told the Daily Mail.
"She lit up the room and was the life of the party," she said.
Dayna is the second woman to be allegedly murdered in Australia in 2023.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend of Dayna's, who said she was taken away too soon by "the hands of evil".
The man was taken to Penrith Police station and charged with murder. He is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.

Greta Thunberg detained at German coal protest.
Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has been detained by police as she rushed to try and jump into a coal mine during a protest in Germany.
Thunberg was detained at the opencast coal mine of Garzweiler 2, where she sat with a group of protesters near the edge of the mine.
"We are going to use force to bring you to the identity check, so please cooperate," a policeman said to the group, according to Reuters footage.
"Greta Thunberg was part of a group of activists who rushed towards the ledge. However, she was then stopped and carried by us with this group out of the immediate danger area to establish their identity," a spokesperson for Aachen police told Reuters, adding one activist had jumped into the mine.

It was not yet clear what would happen to Thunberg or the group she was detained with, or whether the activist who jumped into the mine was injured, the spokesperson said.
Thunberg was carried away by three policemen and held by one arm at a spot further away from the edge of the mine where she was previously sat with the group.
She was then escorted back towards police vans.

Riots and a Trump like president: What the heck is happening in Brazil?
Last October, Brazil announced they had a new President. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took out 50.9% against 49.1% for former President Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing incumbent.
Since the result, Bolsonaro's supporters have protested their leaders defeat.
Earlier this month, in scenes reminiscent of the 2021 January 6 Capitol Building attack in the US, thousands of far right supporters of Bolsonaro stormed the country's congress, supreme court and Presidential Palace.
In this episode of The Quicky, we look at what exactly has happened in Brazil and whether the far right uprising was destined to unfold or if it's simply a copycat event.
