There's one joke Rebecca Harding banned fiancé Andy Lee from making.

After a decade of being one of Australia's favourite couples, Andy Lee and Rebecca Harding finally got engaged earlier this year.

For those familiar with Lee's sense of humour, it's no surprise that he loves a good prank. However, the comedian revealed that one of his pranks was banned by his now-fiancée, and it involved the highly anticipated moment everyone had been waiting for — the proposal.

Andy Lee used to stage fake proposals.

In a recent interview with Stellar magazine, Lee revealed that he used to stage fake proposals whenever paparazzi followed the couple.

"Turns out Bec hated that. That joke got banned, unfortunately. It was one of my favourites," Andy said.

The interviewer, Sarrah Le Marquand, commented to Harding that it was good that Lee had put the running bit "on ice" for awhile, so that when Lee actually proposed, she "knew it wasn't him trolling the media".

"I mean, but did I?" Harding replied. "I don't know … Andy doesn’t like being told what to do."

The couple also spoke about the public pressure surrounding their engagement.

"So in my mind, I was like, 'Can everyone please stop pressuring him to propose? Because he's not going to do it'," Harding said.

"I think you're putting too much weight on what I think of public opinion when it comes to my personal choices," Lee replied, asking: "Would it be fair to say that it bothered you more than it bothered me?"

Harding agreed. "Yeah. I mean, you've got a few more years' experience," she said.

"I think that's part of it," Lee said. "You go, 'Okay, this is affecting your partner'. We've had this discussion many times, where it's like, 'Let's not let other people's behaviour dictate what we want to do."

The moment Andy finally proposed.

Lee proposed (for real) in April 2024, and shared the news on the Hamish & Andy podcast

"I asked Bec to marry me on Sunday," he told listeners.

"Is it a bit quick? That's all I wanna ask," Lee's co-host, Hamish Blake joked, before admitting that he and his wife, Zoë Foster Blake, already knew about the proposal.

For the proposal, Lee decided to call back to the first time he met Harding, when she was working at a Melbourne café in 2014.

Harding and Lee are currently undertaking a $5 million renovation project on a historic mansion in Melbourne's east. Oblivious to Lee's plan, the couple arrived at the site to film some "before" shots for social media. Then, Lee got down on one knee and pretended to grab something out of the marble fireplace.

"I gave her another napkin — because when I first met her at the café, I wrote on a napkin my details — and I gave her another napkin," Lee explained.

On the napkin was a message that mirrored the one Lee had left Harding nearly a decade ago. On the Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show, Lee shared what the napkin said.

"When I first met Bec in a café, she was a waitress. She was busy, and I wrote on a napkin. I left my email address [on the napkin], which she didn't like, but I just said, 'If you have a boyfriend, just tell him that I'm using you to get to him. I bet he's handsome'," Lee said.

On the morning of his proposal, Lee went back to that very café and picked up a napkin.

"I'd actually gone back to the same café, gotten the same napkin again, and I had written, 'If you've got a husband, just tell him that I'm using you to get to him. I bet he's handsome.' And, I proposed with the napkin, which she loved."

As for the ring itself, Lee designed it himself.

"I went and got the ring myself, so I took the plunge. I thought I had an idea, but I didn't realise how important the ring is," he said.

Andy Lee and Bec Harding aren't currently planning to have children.

While the engagement is now official, the couple has also been open about another big decision — whether or not they want to have kids.

In a previous interview on Mamamia's No Filter podcast, Lee discussed how frequently the couple are asked about starting a family.

“There's no rub between Bec and I on that front. Because she also doesn't want them right now. This is the misconception,” he explained.

Lee went on to say that he enjoys the freedom of being available to his family and friends without the responsibilities of parenthood.

"I love being available to people. It's something that I love with friends — being a reliable source to call upon," he said.

However, he also acknowledged that this could change in the future, noting that Harding would be "an amazing mum" if they do decide to have children.

Now, as they prepare for their wedding and continue renovating their dream home, the couple is more in sync than ever.

While Lee may still be the king of comedy, he knows that when it comes to matters of the heart, sometimes it’s best to leave the jokes aside — at least for the big moments.
