A "repulsive" new villain has been exposed by Netflix's Amanda Knox documentary.

Netflix’s Amanda Knox documentary was always likely to spark outrage. Few criminal cases have been as contentious.

But the subject of this isn’t Knox, it isn’t a suspect, it isn’t even a judge – it’s a journalist.

You may not know him by name, but if you’re familiar with the case, you will know Pisa for having coined the nickname: “Foxy Knoxy”.

With that alone in mind, it's hardly surprising that his comments in the documentary include, this:

"To see your name on the front page with a great story that everyone's talking about… it's just like this fantastic buzz," he said. "It's like having sex or something."

And this: "[A body is found] semi-naked, blood everywhere. What more do you want? All that's missing is the Pope!"

Oh, and this: "I think now, looking back, some of the information that came out was just crazy, really, and completely made up. But hey, what are we supposed to do, you know?"

The documentary, released last week, is a 90-minute chronicle of the sensational case, in which the US exchange student and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were accused of slitting the throat of her roommate, Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, in 2007.

The pair were convicted of murder two years later, then released on appeal in 2011, before ultimately being acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court last year due to a lack of physical evidence.

But there was also a trial happening via the headlines, and Pisa was one of the many reporters accused of manipulating public opinion.

While he denies trial by media, he has admitted to not fact-checking details and to cherry-picking photographs of Knox (jokingly) holding a gun to make her look more sinister.

It's revelations like these that have the doco's viewers venting on social media.

Pisa has turned his Twitter feed to private in the wake of the backlash.
