Three children died. Their mother has now been charged with murder.
A 36-year old mother will appear in court today after being charged with the murder of her three young children.
Overnight Victorian Homicide Detectives charged Akon Guode, from Wyndham Vale, with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after the Toyota Kluger four-wheel-drive that she was driving plunged into Lake Gladman, in Melbourne’s west, on April 8.
Inside the car were Ms Guode’s four children.
One-year-old boy Bol Manyang, his four-year-old brother Maudit and his twin sister Anger all died.
Six-year-old Awel, survived the crash along with the accused.
Police officers and passers by jumped into the lake and smashed holes through the car’s windows in an attempt to rescue the children inside.
They then started giving the children CPR.
Police confirmed one child died at the scene, while another passed away on the way to hospital about 5:30pm. The third died in hospital.
It was reported at the time that the mother of seven told her family she felt “dizzy” in the moments before the car went into Lake Gladman.
The 35-year-old mother, from South Sudan, arrived in Australia in 2008 a widow with three children. She met her current partner here, the cousin of her late husband and they had four children together.
Appearing before a magistrate overnight The Age reports that Ms Guode said through an interpreter that she had not been in any sort of trouble since arriving in Australia.
When asked if she had any concerns with being placed in custody she said she had been having some chest pains.
She will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
