It’s been a long time coming – decades, in fact – but next week will see the first ball bounced in the AFL Women’s competition.
To promote this historic occasion, the league has revived an iconic piece of Australian sporting, the iconic “I’d like to see that” AFL commercial from the 1990s.
Just like the original, the new campaign is bursting with legendary sportspeople, from Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne (“Women riding high? I’d like to see that.”) to Cathy Freeman (“More women making Australian sporting history? Yeah, I’d like to see that.”)
Joining them are motivational speaker and burns survivor Turia Pitt, plus the undisputed Queen of Nightly News, Lee Lin Chin.
“Women kicking balls?” the SBS anchor asks.
The final face to appear in the commercial might not be household name right now, but that's set to change.
Moana Hope, 28, is a key member of Collingwood's lineup for the upcoming season, and relishes in any opportunity to promote the game.
“It makes me more motivated, and when I found out the likes of Michelle Payne and Cathy Freeman were involved I couldn’t say no," she told News Corp's Ben Higgins.
“We can officially say ‘next week’ now and I think this ad is definitely going to create some hype ... and shows some ready influential people are behind us.”
Collingwood and Carlton will play the first match on February 3, kicking off the inaugural eight-week season.
You can catch the game at 7:45pm EDT on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.
