Abbie Chatfield, Kyle Sandilands and a viral conversation about slut-shaming.

In a recent radio interview on the Kyle and Jackie O Show, famous TikTok rapper Yung Gravy was not asked much about his music, but instead for his thoughts on two prominent women in the Australian media landscape.

Kyle Sandilands was conducting the interview alongside Brittany Hockley – the podcaster who has risen to fame since first entering the public eye as a contestant on the Honey Badger's Bachelor Australia season. Hockley has been filling in for Jackie O on the hit breakfast radio show, working alongside 'shock jock' Sandilands.

During the interview, Yung Gravy mentioned that he was speaking with Abbie Chatfield online and that they were planning a date together in the new year. And it's at this point that the conversation went downhill quickly.

What followed was a series of slut-shaming comments, comparisons between two adult women, and a whole lot of ick. Some of the comments from Sandilands included:

"Line up, line up. You and everyone else."

"Would you hit that?"

"Are you more likely to root her [Chatfield] or Brittany?"

"Do you want Brittany or Abbie?"

"Did she [Chatfield] send you any nudes? You must be the only one [who hasn't received a nude from Chatfield]."

When Hockley was asked for her opinion on Chatfield, she said: "We've crossed paths multiple times. We're very different. Abbie's fun. Has there been sexting? ... You can't do both [Hockley and Chatfield]. If you're not first, you're last."

Chatfield said she privately messaged Hockley following the interview going live, but that Hockley did not respond to her message. Chatfield has since shared her response via her It's A Lot podcast, criticising the slut-shaming levelled at her.

"I think the issue that people like Kyle and Brittany have with me is that I'm able to speak about sexuality that isn't shameful and they think that must equate to me f**king around every single day, when actually I just don't have the shame that they have. I speak about sex easily, which is empowering other people," Chatfield said on her podcast.

"It feels like we're back in 2019 [with the slut-shaming]. Aren't we over this? Apparently, we're not."

Responding to the interview, Chatfield said her criticism is mostly levelled towards Sandilands, given his comments were far more prolific than his current co-host. She also said:

"At best I think Britt is feeling uncomfortable and nervous about being with Kyle and is going along with it. I think if you're going to co-host a radio show with him it would be difficult, but you do need to consciously be aware of what you're saying. At worst, she's having this weird jealousy thing and trying to bring me down in that moment."

"Kyle is the main perpetuator of this, but she's gone along with it. I know Britt so I messaged her. You didn't just laugh, you added to the jokes. It's my nightmare doing that show – it's a really hard job. So I did give her the benefit of the doubt. Also on live radio, you can get carried away and say things. But she hasn't replied [to my message]," Chatfield said.

"It's an uncomfortable listen."

While Kyle Sandilands hasn't yet responded, Brittany Hockley shared a statement on her Instagram page on Wednesday morning.

"I want to apologise for the undercurrent misogynistic tones that the interview had," she wrote.

"Live on radio, I found myself in a position where Abbie and I were pitted against each other. This was not planned, and this was not something I felt comfortable with and I thought by saying as little possible in the interview, it would not add any fire to the situation," she added.

"I see with hindsight that this was naïve and contradictory to what I stand for."

It's certainly not the first uncomfortable interview that Sandilands has been a part of on the Kyle and Jackie O Show.

As noted on Mamamia's The Spill podcast, Sandilands not only was being slut-shamey towards Chatfield, but was also trying to pit two adult women together, comparing them, and arguably treating them like objects for him to 'offer up'.

"You can hear the sexism, the slut-shaming, and we hear that rhetoric especially on mainstream broadcasts in Australia so much that it does feel part of the fabric of the media landscape. We're so conditioned to think that's how 'blokes talk'," Mamamia's Head of Entertainment Laura Brodnik said.

"It's Kyle's show – he's got the power and there's such a big power imbalance between him and Brittany. I'm not condoning what she said. Abbie went through one of the biggest slut-shaming examples in Australian media with what happened to her on The Bachelor. For all these years later, to be slut-shamed again on Australia's biggest radio show would have all those feelings come rushing back."

Chatfield also praised Yung Gravy for his role during the interview, as he didn't go along with what Sandilands was saying, but instead stuck to facts and respect.

As Chatfield said: "Full credit to Yung Gravy for not playing into this and remaining respectful while all of this was going on. This whole radio segment brought us women way back. We can never escape misogyny, internalised or otherwise."
