Shirts-tied-around-waists: awesome or terrible 90s fashion revival?

If you came of age in the 90s you’ll remember the frustration of waiting 10 minutes for the dial-up modem to connect to the internet. You’ll remember thinking that CDs would never take off (you were sort of right) and before mobile phones even existed you communicated via emoticons in ICQ.

Those. Were. The. Days.

If your friend was running late for something, you had to just wait until they turned up. There was no last minute change of plans via SMS. There was no killing time via Facebook, which is probably why more people smoked back then. You could even spark up in cafes, planes, restaurants and clubs. Waking up to the smell of cigarette smoke on your clothes and in your hair was just one of the extra joys of being hungover in the 90s.

We’ve been hearing about the “the return of the 90s” in fashion for a while now but this week we were really thrown back into the grunge era with news of one particular trend: shirts-tied-around-waists.

It’s a look recently sported by Miranda Kerr, Julianne Hough and the future Mrs Adam Levine, Behati Prinsloo. Even lovebirds Kim and Kanye have gone all in on the trend. In Kim Kardashian’s first post-baby (paparazzi) photo she wore a checked shirt tied around the waist of her oversized denim shirt and Kayne has been snapped front row a la Kurt Cobain.

While celebrities are jumping on the shirt-tying bandwagon, we’re not so sure about it. There’s no other trend that reminds us of trying to hide a period stain on the back of our school uniform than this one. Even if it was nine degrees and raining, there was no greater social shame than having a red mark on the back of your uniform. A jumper tied around your waist was your only salvation.

For us, this 90s trend is on par with the return of the scrunchie. But then again, since we remember the 90s from the first time around maybe we’re just getting old?

Tell us what you think in the comments below? Would you wear it?

What I don't get is Miranda Kerr and Julianne Hough who have jackets tied around their waists but they are already wearing jackets?? Lets not pretend they are going to wear them later...
