The reason no one can decide if this three-year-old is too young for makeup tutorials.

Little kids have always loved playing with mum’s makeup. Rummaging through her lipsticks and smearing them all over your face is almost a right of passage for any toddler.

Three-year-old Liriana is no different. Except, she’s really really good at it.

Oh, and she’s doing it front of half a million people.

When Liriana’s Kylie Jenner inspired makeup tutorial was shared by popular beauty Instagram account, @MyMakeUpCover, over 500,000 people asked themselves – is three years old just too young to be wearing makeup, even if it is just for fun?

Priming and concealing before creating a ‘smokey eye’ with a makeup palette worth almost $100, the joy this little girl gets out of doing her makeup is all over her face.

But should a toddler know what concealer is, and why women use it, no matter how much she enjoys smearing it on her face?

The reactions to the video were unsurprisingly mixed.

Some saw it as a positive experience:

“Gorgeous it is great to see little ones expressing themselves through makeup.”

“She needs to teach me how to do makeup!”

“We all did this when we were little, she just happens to be great at it, stop with the negativity.”

Others, not so much:

“This girl shouldn’t be taught that she needs makeup at such a young age she’s naturally beautiful.”

“She’s never gonna believe she’s beautiful without makeup.”

“It’s sick that this little girl is being taught that she has to put a load of makeup all over her face in order to be pretty. Disgusting.”

“Her mother is ruining her daughter’s natural beauty.”

While we all played with mum’s makeup at some point in our childhood, there’s a reason why it’s different when Liriana does it.

Because makeup tutorials didn’t exist when we did it. Well, they did. But they were burnt onto a CD or done as ‘after dinner shows’ rather than posted on public YouTube channels.

We certainly weren’t making money from it or hashtagging #sponsoredpost, but we also weren’t brought up in a society where documenting our lives on the internet is normal.

The curiosity with makeup hasn’t changed. But the rules have.

“My daughter does not wake up and put make-up on. She just loves to play with it from time to time and I have no problem allowing her to do it because we’ve all done it,” Liriana’s mum, Suella told Yahoo following the divided opinions about the makeup tutorial.

“I started to record her doing her make-up for my family so when I was reading people’s comments saying I’m trying to sell her or taking away her innocence or that making her not love herself without make-up, I was baffled. I don’t think any mother would bring that negativity to their child; this is all for fun.”

Whether we agree with it or not, it’s up to Suellaa to decide whether Liriana is old enough to play with makeup.

After all, will there ever be a “right time” for anything we let our kids do that everyone will agree on? Probably not.
