Friday's news in 5 minutes.

1. A 16-year-old girl stole a machete. Then, she stabbed her Uber driver to death.

On Tuesday, 16-year-old Eliza Wasni walked out of a Chicago Walmart with a knife and a machete without paying for them.

She then ordered an Uber, and a few blocks into the ride, began stabbing her driver in an unprovoked attack.

The driver – 34-year-old Grant Nelson – managed to flee the vehicle and run to a nearby apartment complex for help. He was heard by residents screaming through intercom buzzers, “Help me, help me! I’m going to die.”

The Chicago Tribune reports he was able to describe his attacker to police, before dying from his injuries in hospital.

Wasni was discovered near the scene by police. She had driven Grant’s car a short distance and then fled the vehicle on foot.

She was wearing just a bra and leggings when she was found and was covered in blood.

The 16-year-old has now been charged as an adult with first-degree murder over the “extremely violent” crime. She is currently being held without bail.

Nelson’s brother, Todd, told reporters outside the court that Grant was “the most gentle, kind person”.

“He never hurt anyone. He was good to animals, he was good to children,” he said.

“He was just trying to do the best he could in life.”

2. Gunshots and explosions at high-end hotel and casino in the Phillippines, injuring dozens.

Gunshots and explosions erupted after midnight in a hotel and casino complex near Manila’s airport, sending hundreds fleeing into darkened streets early Friday in chaos that appeared linked to a Muslim militant siege in the country’s south.

The Islamic State group, in a quick communique, took responsibility for the attack though the Philippines’ police chief, Ronald dela Rosa, said on Friday there was no indication the incident was related to terrorism and it may have been a robbery, AAP reports.

“We cannot say this is an act of terror … he did not hurt anyone,” he said. “If you are a terrorist you will sow terror.”

Philippine police rushed to the Resorts World Manila complex early Friday after gunshots rang out and witnesses reported gunmen barging in at a mall in the commercial centre, where whitish smoke began billowing from an upper floor.

Witnesses reported seeing injured people, including a SWAT member, who rushed to the scene and was reportedly fired upon by unidentified men. It was not immediately clear if anyone was killed, or if the attack had concluded.

Resorts World Manila said in its Facebook account that it was “currently on lockdown following reports of gunfire from unidentified men,” adding “the company is working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees are safe.”

“We ask for your prayers during these difficult times,” the company said.

“I heard many, many gunshots,” Julio Silva, a casino player who managed to dash out of the mall complex amid the gunfire, told DZMM radio network.

Silva said he saw a SWAT member who was shouting “I was hit, I was hit.”

A DZMM radio reporter on the scene said she saw two ambulances ferrying two people away, one with a bandage on the leg and another in wheelchair.

As news of the attack spread, US President Donald Trump offered the thoughts and prayers of the American people to the Philippines.

“It is really very sad as to what’s going on throughout the world with terror,” he said from the White House Rose Garden. He said he is “closely monitoring the situation” and will continue to provide updates.

A young girl has been approached by a knife-wielding man in the fourth child abduction attempt in Sydney within a week.

AAP reports the 11-year-old was approached outside a Summer Hill property on Thursday morning, with the man pulling the weapon from his coat.

He then tried to grab her, but the girl ran away and reported the incident at her school, police said.

The offender was described as being of Asian appearance, 30 to 40 years old, with a red mark on the right side of his face.

Police are also investigating an incident involving a three-year-old girl at Pioneers Memorial Park in Leichhardt on Tuesday evening.

In another attack, a five-year-old girl was indecently assaulted by a man of Indian appearance in Glebe on Saturday morning.

And last Thursday a mother had the fright of her life when a man attempted to abduct her 15-month-old toddler from the Macquarie Street Mall in Liverpool.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incidents to come forward.

4. A young Cairns mum has won a $40 million lotto jackpot. Her plan? Hire a cleaner.

A young mother from Cairns is still in disbelief after discovering she held the winning ticket for Tuesday night’s $40 million Oz Lotto jackpot.

Speaking to the Cairns Post, the woman – who wishes to remain anonymous – said she intends to be generous with her win.

High on her family’s wish list? Hiring a cleaner, building their dream home and spending more time together.

“I’m stressing out!” she said of her win.

“It’s just surreal! I can’t even believe it just yet. It hasn’t even sunk in that we’re going to have so much money. Oh my god.

“The first thing I pictured was my husband not having to work long hours anymore and being able to spend more time as a family with the kids.”

She said she spent last week “down in the dumps” after feeling the pressure of financial strain before buying the ticket.

The woman said after paying for their home – which can now be “much more than what we ever thought we’d be able to afford” – the couple will invest the rest of their winnings to set their kids up for the rest of their lives.

5. Russian President Vladimir Putin hints at country’s role in hacking.

President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that some “patriotic” individuals may have engaged in hacking but insisted Russia as a country has never done it.

The Russian leader lamented what he described as “Russo-phobic hysteria” in the US that makes it “somewhat inconvenient to work with one another or even to talk,” adding that “someday this will have to stop.”

US intelligence agencies have accused Russia of hacking into Democratic Party emails, helping Trump’s election victory, and the congressional and FBI investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties with Russia have shattered Moscow’s hopes for a detente with Washington.

Speaking at a meeting with leading international news agencies, Putin insisted that “we never engage in that at the state level.”

He alleged that some evidence pointing at Russian hackers’ participation in cyber attacks – he didn’t specify which – could have been falsified in an attempt to smear Russia.

“I can imagine that some do it deliberately, staging a chain of attacks in such a way as to cast Russia as the origin of such an attack,” Putin said.

“Modern technologies allow that to be done quite easily.”

Putin added that while the Russian state has never been involved in hacking, it was “theoretically possible” that Russia-West tensions could have prompted some individuals to launch cyber attacks.

“Hackers are free people, just like artists who wake up in the morning in a good mood and start painting,” he said.

“The hackers are the same. They would wake up, read about something going on in interstate relations and if they feel patriotic, they may try to contribute to the fight against those who speak badly about Russia.”

Putin’s comments come as former leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage is named as a “person of interest” in the US investigation into possible collusion between Russia and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

The Guardian reports Farage has not been accused of wrongdoing and was not a suspect or target of the US investigation.

The newspaper said the former leader of the UK Independence Party had “raised the interest” of FBI investigators due to his connections with Trump and Julian Assange’s Wikileaks, which published leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee during the campaign.

Farage said on Twitter it had taken him a long time to read the Guardian article because he was “laughing so much at this fake news”.

“This hysterical attempt to associate me with the (Vladimir) Putin regime is a result of the liberal elite being unable to accept Brexit and Trump,” he said.

“I consider it extremely doubtful that I could be a person of interest to the FBI as I have no connections to Russia.”

6. An appeal into the acquittal of Luke Lazarus’ rape charge has been launched.

The case of a Sydney man who was acquitted of raping a woman in an alleyway behind a nightclub is headed for the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Luke Andrew Lazarus, 25, has previously spent time in jail over the incident in 2013 but his conviction was overturned and a judge-alone trial was ordered.

Last month, he was acquitted after Judge Robyn Tupman found the complainant’s evidence that she said “stop” was unreliable.

NSW Director of Public Prosecutions on Thursday lodged an appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeal.

The then 18-year-old had alleged she was assaulted behind Soho nightclub after meeting Lazarus on the dance floor. His hotelier father Andrew owns the club.

Following the acquittal, the woman took to social media and said she felt mad, heartbroken, let down and confused.
