An 11-year-old Victorian girl has been found dead.

Neighbours reported hearing screaming on the night the girl died.

An 11-year-old girl was reportedly found murdered on Sunday morning after a neighbour heard screaming at her Wangaratta house the night before.

According to the ABC, neighbours said a party in the house on Saturday night finished around 2am.

Police were then called to the house at 11am and the body of the girl was found.

Neighbour Jenelle Robinson said, “I heard a terrible, terrifying scream, like someone wailing,” according to The Border Mail.

Police have arrested a 29-year-old Mildura male and he is being held in custody at Wangaratta Hospital, but its not known why he is there.

The man was allegedly not well known to the girl.

Neighbours reported that the young girl was quiet but friendly.

Jeremy Boruch told the ABC, “She was a pretty quiet girl, but like most kids in the neighbourhood, most kids around here get along. I think the community as a whole might be under pressure. It’s one of those things that’s out of the blue.

“Not many people prepare for this sort of things, do they? Shocking.”

Another neighbour told The Herald Sun, “She was really gorgeous. It’s such a horrible thing. I don’t want to think about it.”

According to The Herald Sun, the young girl was living in the house with her mother for three years.

Speaking to the ABC,  Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent said that “at some point in time, [crime scene specialists and homicide] will speak to the man in custody” as well as interview several witnesses.
