Nine-year-old helicoptered to Wollongong after two school buses crash.

A nine-year-old boy has been air-lifted to hospital after a crash involving two school buses at Albion Park, south-west of Wollongong.

Police said the buses were carrying about 40 students from a local private school later identified as Illawarra Christian School.

A number of students of varying ages were treated by paramedics at the scene and the boy was flown by air ambulance to Wollongong Hospital.

Five more children were taken to hospital with bruises and broken bones.

Drivers of both buses were taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing, said a police spokesperson..

The Illawarra Christian School posted a statement on its website:

A Premier Illawarra bus accident occurred at 3.40pm today. The Shell Cove/Flinders bus 172 and Warilla bus 188 will be delayed. Children on these routes will be late in arriving home. All parents of children on the bus have been contacted.

The crash is being investigated by local police.
